Old Timer Happy Again!

I shot with an old Nikon FE for years until I got my digital point-and-shoot and film went out of style. Was really lamenting the good old days of film photography and all my lenses (from wide angle to micro-Nikkor to 210 Zoom to 400mm fixed to bellows) that I couldn't use anymore. Then I found a professional grade Nikon D200 on eBay for a couple of hundred that lets me meter through the lens and shoot in aperture priority with all my old Nikon lenses and I am back in old-timer photography heaven again! Loving it in South Dakota. No auto focus with those old lenses but that just makes it all the more fun for me. Tried using some of the amateur versions like the D4 or the D3200 series but they would not let me meter through the lens. Contacted a Nikon tech support person and they steered me to the older Nikons that metered through the lens.

I still have my FE, but when I go out shooting, I take a D200 and D7000. I don't know what you mean about the D4 being an amateur version.

You are right, I mistyped and it should have been D40 not D4. I guess I am not very good at this screen keypad typing as I was an old teletyper for many years. The D40 cannot meter through the lens. Thanks for stopping me from leading others astray.

No problem. You should get a vertical grip for the D200 if you haven't yet. 2 batteries go a long way to keeping you shooting.

I had a grip on my 20D and it sucked. It gave me false battery levels for some reason. It was a known problem I found out AFTER I bought the damn thing.

Only feature of my old FE that I miss is the ability to use a shutter release cable. I built a gun stock support for the FE and my 400 mm lens in my wood shop and I put a cable release in the trigger position for shooting about 30 years ago. It worked pretty good when I wasn't able to use a tripod. The D200 doesn't accept a cable release, so I haven't used my gun stock since. I haven't done the research, but do any of you know if there is another way of remotely operating the shutter?

Got a remote release today. liked it so much I am getting my son a wireless model.
