Default The Katy Freeway

I've never seen a freeway this wide before and did not know one even existed.

Quote:
The Katy Freeway in Houston, Texas, spans across 26 lanes making it the worlds widest. The freeway is broken down in to 12 main lanes (six in each direction), eight feeder lanes and six managed lanes. The managed lanes carry mass transit vehicles during peak hours and are only made available to single-occupancy vehicles for a toll-fee during odd-peak hours.

Seeing a deer try to run across that would be quite a sight to behold.

That's not a picture of the Katy Freeway, but yes I believe it does hold the record for one of the widest at certain points.

There is a Hov/Toll you can take down the middle of it; during normal commuting hours, that Toll is over $10 each way.

I'd like to see a bunch of climate protestors try to block that.

Pro-tip: That's not a picture of the Katy Freeway (I-10), but I-10 is wide, yet ill planned. It's STILL a parking lot during rush hour, even past the choke points.

For starters, they've got two dedicated HOV lanes each way. Why not just make those regular travel lanes for everyone to enjoy? Save hundreds of millions on special overpasses, and Jersey barriers to keep those lanes separate, for starters.

And despite this, traffic is still ****ed up like a football bat

Maybe having to pay $10 each way has something to do with the other lanes being crowded. That's how it is with all the toll roads around here. People don't want to pay to use them.

HOV lanes and Express Toll Lanes on roads are a ****ING SCAM.
Our dollars built the roads, we should have access TO ALL LANES without payment.

I-95, easily the most travelled road in the tri-county, well over 300K in both broward and miami-dade, has two express lanes which require payment, and increases in cost based on traffic density.
This is BS, worse than BS, as in some sections there are 5 total lanes, with 2 of the 5 being express pay lanes.

Also, FL Turnpike was built as toll road in 1960s, with the promise the tolls would be no more once the road was paid in full.
Well, 60 years later every inch of the road requires a toll,,, someone lied!!

Here in Jax, the people were sold on no new tolls. Wrong. Can't build tolls on existing roadways or highways.

How do they get around it, you ask? They build new roads or expand the ones that are in place saying they are only putting a toll on the new part of the roadway

Houston basically designs crappy roads, then spends millions of dollars and decades of time, making them progressively worse. Once a particular section of road has been reconfigured and completed, they start over again on that section. At no time in the history of the city, has any highway been fully opened.

A smart investor would put their money into construction cone businesses.

I believe for all roads, including federal, such as interstates, that current lanes cannot be converted into toll lanes.
BUT, someone figured a way around, as they did such on I-95 in Broward.

This goes back to what I have said, it does not matter how much money the gov steals this year, they will need MUCH MORE next year.

When I was young, I heard a joke.....a guy started his career building the Gulf Freeway, and ended up retiring from that job, still working on the Gulf Freeway, which still wasn't finished.

Grew up with a dood in the hood, he got into road work and repairs out of hight school, learned it and then went on his own.

Did well, as wife was classified minority, she was on biz docs, so they could get gov contracts even if bids were 15% higher.

After many years he decided that roadwork was lucrative, BUT he was paying a fortune on each job for the barricades.
So, he starting making them for himself, thus avoiding the rental on his jobs.
Then he decided to go full bore, he stopped roadwork and did 100% barricade manufacturing.
He did well, as never rented them, but got a few good supply contracts that paid him much more than roadword AND with a lot less stress.
