Pretty much ALL of the Henry .44 Flat and Spencer .56 rimfire cartridges were from the Indians. They all had repeating 1860 Henry, Winchester 1866 and Spencer rifles. The US had only the single shot Springfields. More power, sure, but not what you want when the natives are able to get off a shot every half second, and they have anywhere from 7 to 16 rounds in the magazine.

Started in 1910-1950. Same is true for Civil War battlefields, Indian relics, etc...people use to go into fresh plowed fields to look (eyeball) for souvenirs.
No one really cared about the stuff back then unless they wanted a souvenir or something to sell to tourist. Metal detecting started in the 1950's with surplus WW2 mine detectors and over the decades developed into more specialized machines. I only wish the provenance of all relics hadn't been lost to time. Whoever inherits the items never keeps that info. A lot of battles and questions could be answered by knowing who was exactly at a position on a battlefield. We have been surprised by dismounted Cav. companies, etc...in ACW reenacting. Their rate of fire is 'shock and awe' when you are toting and shooting a muzzleloader Not the same range, but if they get close enough to you - game over. |

Only with direct Indian supervision. I have watch some documentaries on it all. One was a few years ago with a supervised group following the trail the Indians took after the battle. Apparently, the Sioux took everything including personal from the dead soldiers and stashed it.
It ended by a bluff area where bones were found. That was it and declared a burial ground |

We visited Little Bighorn Battlefield Park a few years ago. A very sobering experience. It was very interesting as a lot of the story is from the native American point of view. They were very brave and courageous fighters. Custer was a "Major" screw up.
Read US history from the Native American point of view, it's not much different from what's happening today. |
