Default I need to revisit my El Camino hood scoop...

Here's a pic I posted in the original thread:

The hood scoop has arrived, and I've installed "Fuel Injection" emblems on both sides. I wanted to use only 3M double-sided tape to mount the scoop tp my hood, but your posts convined me that I need screws. Here's the problem:

The fiberglass where the screwws would be attaced is very thin, like 1/16". There's no way it'll hold a screw. The scoop is strengthened by boxes, but that doesn't change the thiness problem. But there's a lip on all sides of the scoop, and there's a 7/32" recess behind the lip on the sides.

7/32" is conveniently the thickness of 1/4" Luan plywood and the recess is about 1.5" wide. Can I glue this plywood to the recess and then use double-sided tape on the plywood to attach to the metal? I realize I need to remove the primer from the scoop whee the plywood would be, but what glue shoud I use to attach the wood to the scoop? E6000, Gorilla Glue, or what?

Also how do I keep the plywood from rotting? Prime it, coat it with clear polyurethane? Or do you have a better idea altogether?

Got any pics of the underside of what you're trying to do? And...um...I wouldn't be putting any stinking plywood anywhere on the body of a car?
Can't even imagine a scoop that incorporates plywood.

This stuff holds a screw nicely & ain't no wood. It'll glue up nicely too.

Larry, this is also great stuff to work with. I made a custom mount for the Nav system on my boat. It comes in many colors and is strong, virtually rot proof, easy to cut, drill and use adhesives with.

And the plywood rots if it isn't sealed PERFECTLY...

If you want my candid opinion here it is: If it isn't readily apparent how to mount the hood scoop, don't f'uck up your El Camino with it. Otherwise, take it to an aftermarket installer and have them mount it.

Just put up a link to give an idea of what to use.
You can get "star board" cheaper online I'm sure.

It is really nice to work with and adheres to glas very well.

If you're hell bent on the hood scoop, buy a steel all in one hood with scoop and have it painted to match. That way if you ever decide to return it to stock, nothing is seriously borked up

This.

Because that might be the worst hood scoop I've ever seen.

Your hood is not flat so a flat backer is not feasible. I do not have a specific adhesive to recommend because my knowledge is decades old now but all the major adhesive manufacturers make glues specifically designed to do what you want to do. I would call a local automotive paint and body supply jobber and ask what they sell. Be aware of two things though: the glues are permanent meaning destruction of the scoop if it needs to go later, and removal WILL damage the paint underneath, and possibly require prying with enough force to damage the hood itself. Some two part adhesives require specialty mixing and application guns as well, so ask if you need a $150.00 applicator to apply your $45.00 tube of glue.

Personally I don't like "stickon" hoodscoops on anything. Totally ornamental and non funtional. Looks like a Bubba car, only he'd cut the hood out underneath to clear a highrise intake or aircleaner. Why do you want to spoil the nice clean lines of the hood?

Nicest scoop on an elkie I've seen is one like this....but only if you need the clearance.

But.....to each his own i guess.

The hood on that black Elko is a "cowl induction" hood, not a stinger copy. I agree it looks more of a piece than the little plastic wart Larry likes but tastes do vary.

Why not just use fiberglass to build up the flange where the screws go, it's easy to work with and will easily bond to the existing glass
