Default Are 4k BluRays worth it?

New UHD 4K TV, & 4k BluRay player, hi-speed cables, etc.

I'm not seeing a lot of difference in the 4K BR vs. std BR. Maybe I was expecting too much, thought it might have been like the jump from DVD to BR. Thoughts?

The thing that gets me is, what is it people are going to be watching that is shot and distributed in 4K? I have an antenna, not cable, and at best the OTA broadcasts are in 1080, not 4K. Much of the older and some newer stuff is 720. So how will a 4K help me unless I have source material that actually reaches me in 4K.

I stream content, but is that even available in 4K?

People actually spend extra money for "high speed" cables?

Let me guess: your cheap ass is using Cat 3 Ethernet cables for your 10 gigabit LAN connections, aren't you?

Yes - get it. The cost differential is bs a regular blue-ray player is not substantial - though, the 4K DVDs are not abundant in the DVD rental stores and Netflix does not offer them. But, I rented “The Revenant” in 4K one evening after renting it a few weeks earlier in normal Blue Ray format - and, combined with my 4K TV (LG OLED) the scenery was actually beyond stunning. After that, we would rent mostly the 4K DVD format. That said, the local video stores have all recently closed so I don’t know if/when we’ll ever benefit from the 4K feature on our DVD player.

Amazon Prime has a fair amount of 4k, some even in HDR. We finally replaced our 20+ year old Mitsubishi HD rear projection TV with new 4k/HDR Sony and 4k material is pretty amazing.
ATSC 3.0 (4K) is on the air in DFW, Austin, and many other cities but Houston isn't on the list I saw. For now I'd guess most of the content is just 1080 upconverted. And few (any?) existing TVs have ATSC 3.0 tuners. You need a set top box with a tuner to receive ATSC 3.0.
I don't plan to invest in 4K Bluray though I'll get an ATSC 3.0 tuner if enough content becomes available.

I thought we were talking about TV and DVD player cables. My bad.

You clearly don't understand the concept of bandwidth.

uh, no - you don't have to spend big dollars for faster cables, you can get the higher bandwidth rated cables for the same price as the HDMI1 cables. And before you say it's digital then why is networking done with Cat6 cables instead of Cat5 anymore? Because Cat6 is rated for higher bandwidth.

Can you even find a cable less than HDMI 2.0 these days? Unless you happen to yank one out of your cable bucket pretty much anything you will see today will support any format you choose. That is, unless you want the super low distortion HDMI 2.0 cable. I think Monster is making those...

You are correct, I’m not a computer nerd. I’ll take that as a compliment.

Where can you get an HDMI 1 cable?

Just ordered an LG 77" OLED and a Panny 4K BluRay for Christmas. Can't wait for it to arrive so I can replace my old 1080 setup. WOOT! WOOT!

You're probably good to keep streaming in this resolution.
