The last debate I watched was the one with Ross Perot, Bill Clinton and George Bush Sr.

Kinda gives you an idea of where politics lands on my give-a-shit meter.

Sadly, many, many others seem to share your sentiment, ergo, we are where we are.

I didn't even know it was on. I would have watched it just to have more ammo to use.

You can tap your toe at me all you want, but these debates really prove nothing. The smart individual doesn't base his or her choices for political office on a one or two hour televised sound-off where the candidates are mostly trying to discredit one another and make promises they know they can't keep, while re-hashing their campaign platform. I never said I didn't vote or didn't participate in the political process (nor did I say I did...that's none of anyone's business). But my criteria for selecting a candidate is a lot less facile than that.

The other part of this is (and I've said this before) that whether people choose to believe it or not, state and local elections are really what has a more direct on people's livelihood. Federal elections...not so much.

if Maryland's gun laws are so great, why all the shootings in Baltimore?

if 'gun free' zones work so well, why doesn't Mrs. Clinton's security detail park their guns and just hold up signs saying 'gun free zone' on either side of her as she waddles about?

It still astonishes me how many people feel that way. Look, I don't like terrorism as much as the next guy. But I'm not willing to give up my rights, that I wasn't even aware were being given away so gross negligently in the first place. You got a legit suspicion on me? Fire away NSA...but I will never agree that mass surveillance is the answer no matter how plagued with terrorism this country gets.

Don't think Snowden is a hero...ok...I get that. But he's no traitor. If he were he could have made a shit ton of money off his skills and knowledge. And yet, he didn't.

He cross the line from Whistle blower to traitor when he gave out details of Americas intelligence gathering effort overseas.

If he comes home I HOPE HE IS EXECUTED.

Let me give you a hypothetical situation and then a question. Lets say you are a private investigator working for a guy who is trying to find out if his wife is cheating on him. You follow the wife to a busy restaurant where she is having lunch with a man who is not her husband. You're trying to figure out if it is a date or just a business associate. So you are a couple of tables over and trying to eavesdrop on their conversation. That is the hypothetical.

When you are sitting there, what do you hear? Do you just hear the woman's conversation? Do you hear the waitress taking someone else's order? Do you hear noises from the kitchen? Do you hear the jukebox playing? Do you possibly also overhear bits of conversations from other tables? Of course you do. At least your ears do. But your brain is smart enough to filter out all the extraneous "noise" to try to find just the conversation between the wife and her companion. So you hear all the other stuff, but you aren't really listening to it. Right?

So if you think of that scenario on a broader scale, it sorta replicates what NSA is doing, doesn't it? They are listening to millions of signals flying through the airwaves to try to eavesdrop on Achmed, who wants to blow up a school bus full of kids. When they are "listening", they might also overhear someone talking to their kids about school, or someone ordering a pizza, or tons of other things. But the key is, they aren't really listening to all those things, even if they hear them.

Just like the hypothetical situation in the cafe, if you plug your ears to avoid hearing the waitress, the busboy, the music, etc, you also are not going to be able to hear the conversation of the cheating wife that you really want to listen to.

Just another way of thinking of it.

I get what you are trying to say. However, that's in a public place, and I've no right to expect privacy. When all my emails, texts, voicemails, geolocations, credit card transactions, video surveilance is collected and filed...and able to be reviewed by the feds without any notice or warrant...then there is a huge problem. We might as just well admit we've lost. This country is already not the country I grew to love. It's turned into and us vs them with law enforcement. Just waiting for surgically implanted body cams and in body drug monitoring to complete the bill. I mean hey...If I'm not doing anything wrong...then no problem right?

They don't just collect Achmeds stuff. There is a huge facility in Nevada that intercepts just about every feed of your life. That's ok with you>

Back to the debates

Anyone who wants to have more government programs and spending to fix problems caused by more government programs in spending is either insane, an idiot or a Progressive liberal dolt.

No, its not OK. If I had my preference, the entire middle east would have been a glowing, steaming sheet of glass since 9/12/01, and we'd be publicly executing terrorists in other parts of the world on the nightly news. But some of us aren't willing to do that. If we're not going to eradicate the vermin, we have to do something to try to keep them from killing us. So far, this kind of collection is what current technology can do.

Also, I feel that I have an expectation of privacy within my own home, and to a degree inside my vehicle. But as soon as I start sending signals through the air outside my home, I've just always assumed those signals were out there for anyone to hear, just like a conversation in a restaurant. That is why I don't put things on the internet, in emails, on social media, or even in phone conversations that I would fear having someone else hear.

Sorry for the thread hijack. Back to your regular programming.
