So a shooting friend of mine, who knows i do woodworking gives me this piece off a futon, can i duplicate it? sure.
so thanks to Rickles, I had one last piece of white oak left in my pile of lumber, and it was just the right size for this project once you cut around the knots. got the stain as close as i could with what i had in hand. |

so in the end, very little of that large lumber pile went to waste or unused. pile of sawdust, some knotty parts that got cut around, and wavy edges that got trued up.

Oak knots can really cause you pain! I mean trees grow branches, only so much clear….I drill ‘‘em cut them off and on some projects leave them. Glad my wood went to good use! |

I am always on the lookout for interesting flaws in wood. Sometimes, while running boards through my planer, I will come across cool features and deliberately make them the centerpiece of the project. Knots, worm holes, cracks, are all things that I will look for. Built this black walnut box for a buddy's birthday last summer. It had a cool worm hole with a bit of rope figure above it that I made the front panel of the box. Some people would consider it a flaw and throw that piece out - I try to make it a feature. |
