After more than three decades, authorities have arrested a man suspected of terrorizing communities throughout California from 1976 to 1986 who became known first as the ‘East Area Rapist’ and later as the ‘Golden State Killer,’ according to the Sacramento Bee.

Authorities are expected to announce the arrest Wednesday of a man suspected of terrorizing residents from Sacramento to the Bay Area and Southern California, beginning with a string of rapes in the mid-1970s, according to the Bee. His victims ranged in age from 13 to 41 and included women home alone, women at home with their children, and husbands and wives, according to the FBI.

“Everyone was afraid,” FBI Special Agent Marcus Knutson said in 2016. “We had people sleeping with shotguns, we had people purchasing dogs. People were concerned, and they had a right to be. This guy was terrorizing the community. He did horrible things.”

The suspect has been living in the Sacramento area and was identified after a renewed push of the investigation by the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department and District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert, a source told the Bee.

Although no suspect has been publicly identified, Sacramento County jail records indicate Joseph James DeAngelo was booked into jail Tuesday night on two counts of murder, based on an arrest warrant from the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department.

A press conference is reportedly happening at noon in Sacramento...

Ironically I just caught the end of a forensics files episode on that and they had text at the end saying “on 4/25/18 Joseph James Deangelo, 72 was arrested in conjunction with the golden state killer case”

Mr. DeAngelo, who has adult children, was twice employed as a police officer in two small California cities: In Exeter, in the Central Valley, from 1973 to 1976, and in Auburn, north of Sacramento, from 1976 to 1979, according to Mr. Jones.

He was convicted in 1979 for shoplifting a can of dog repellent and a hammer from a store in Sacramento County. The incident led to his dismissal from the Auburn police force. The arrest came amid the rash of rapes in the area.

California investigators tracked down the man they suspect is the Golden State Killer by comparing crime scene DNA to information on genealogy websites consumers use to trace their ancestry, a prosecutor said on Thursday.
