Funny to see this! I was going thru another few boxes of shit and found a stack of letters, all dated 1912. All in Yiddish, not a letter can I read….This old house we own was previously owned by Jewish immigrants trying to farm, unsuccessfully…

I value my copy of "Portnoy's complaint" not just for the fact that it cracks me up, and that Philip Roth is such a superb user of the English language, but also giving me a window into American Jewish culture, with lots of Yiddish terms sprinkled around the book.

He complains about his suffocating Jewish Mother who is frustrated that he doesn't settle down & marry "a nice Jewish girl" but spends his time chasing shikses*, when other nice Jewish boys are making a success of their lives. He lampoons her misquoting her saying:

"Do you remember Seymour Schmuck, Alex ?" she asks me, or Aaron Putz or Howard Shlong, or some yo-yo I am supposed to have known from grade school twenty-five years ago..."

Should have got the Nobel Prize for literature for this book ( and "My Life as a Man" which followed ) IMO.
