Been here, done this....you got to make a decision, do you want to:
A- Get it back running and driving as quickly and cheaply as possible? If so...used running engine off CL or salvage yard. B: Put some money into it, rebuild the engine, custom it up with a good cam, rods, pistons, punch it 20 over, etc...If so, pull the engine and strip it down, have it machined, and decide on what master kit and crank you want to use. C- Make considerably more power- Stroker is the best bet...but it costs $$$. Got ot find a good block that can be clearanced adequately for the stroke, then you have ot choose a good cam, heads, intake, then decide on a compression ratio and a kit. D- Power house that bitch up, throw in a Gen 5 454..put the 4V on a new intake, hook up the distributor, fuel pump, etc...and enjoy the torque while the D36 and 700R4 last... |

Do you have someone to do all the machine work? There are some areas the require grinding the block for clearances. If you have someone that can hand you a completed block to drop in then go for it. But.....your heads may not flow well enough for the larger displacement causing an actual loss in performance or you block may need to be decked. Lots of things that can go wrong. IMHO, a GM crate engine (long block) will give you your best bang for the buck along with a warranty. This will also make it easier to sell when it comes time. You will easily have a couple grand +, in machine work and parts in the your rebuild. Then cross your fingers that it works right. You can pick up a 350 HO crate engine for under $3k. http://www.superchevyperformance.com...gines_s/17.htm JMHO, YMMV |

What do you, ultimately, want to do with this car? I think you'd spend $2k - $3k having someone build a stroker for you. Is the car in good enough shape, otherwise, to make this car worth keeping and driving? Are you going to daily drive it?

Set a budget and goals. You can do this with long term goals in mind and be satisfied with the results. If I do mine again, (not likely) it will be with gas mileage in mind.

My original plan is a daily driver. Probably still want to do that.
I don't race or anything like that. Both of my C5's were DD's, and I was fine with that. I'll probably just find a used motor and get it up and running. |

The car in that link needs $10,000 worth of work to be a $3000 car.

well, shit, mine is at least a $15k car here, then.
without the new engine. got a little ways to go before I hate the $18k mark, though http://houston.craigslist.org/cto/3540646046.html Last edited by Montehall; 02-11-2013 at 4:15pm. |

here's a question that just popped into my head...
how long do you think it took to do that. I really only noticed the issue once I pulled my intake manifold, which I'm assuming is a coincidence, and after that, it only ran for maybe 20-30 minutes total. it surely would have taken longer to that kind of damage? |

The hour meter had not yet ticked 1/10 of an hour and it was knocking... I pulled it down and both rods, both pistons, both ring sets, the crank, etc...all ruined. Less than about 6 minutes of idling on a bench/stand is all it took, with a little grit in the engine..to kill it. A V8, with full pressure lube, pumping that shit through all the journals and bearings...30 minutes is pure hell. |

my decision is:
To wait. because 1. I don't the money for another engine 2. I can't get my old one out anyway 3. Help out a mechanic that owns his own shop and said "if you ever need anything done on that car, let me know and I'll help out"; apparently "anything" doesn't include swapping an engine block. |
