Too bad his "ingenuity" couldn't have bitten him on the ass instead of you. I don't want to get political here but I bet I know who he voted for.

Thats more than likely caused by running it out of oil. Another thing that will do it is, spark knock. Using cheap gas or running too much advance will cause uncontrolled ignition in the cylinder. When that happens, its like taking a hammer to the top of the piston. That slams the rod down against the crank, hard.

Mid 70s C3 motors are not any better than most other car/truck motors. The exception is the L82 motors (Decent cam and usually 4 bolt mains IIRC). Base corvette heads are large chamber, but flow decent. Can make decent power. Usually 2 bolt mains. Unless you're going to make stupid power, 2 bolts are fine. |

You should also check some local wrecking yards. These guys also sell on ebay with shipping included in the price. It really shouldn't be a problem to find a good running 350 for between $500 and $1000.

However, my driveway isn't going to lend itself to engine removal since its gravel. So I'm probably going to go used and see about having a shop do the removal and install. But maybe put it together myself, to save that labor |

That 290 crate engine would be a smooth running drop in that would probably work well with the carb you already have, but if you are going to have all the heartache and money spent, I would seriously consider putting a 383 in it. Even a mild one at 1 hp/cubic inch would make your C4 a much hotter plaything for the street.

Put on your flak jacket.
I would go with a $500 used motor. To be blunt, that car is a hacked up shitbox. I have owned more of them than I care to count. You toss a used motor and just cruise around in it. You spend $3,000 on a stroker motor, then you need headers, exhaust, and everything else that goes along with making it run right and to be brutally frank, I can see you making some noob mistake breaking it in that blows the thing up. You have already admitted to eyeball timing it, running unknown fuel pressure and fuel volume. You can't guesstimate stuff like that breaking in a new motor. You go down the path of "well, I have this much tied up in it, I might as well fix XYZ". It's a slippery slope. Not trying to be a dick, just trying to save you some time, money and sanity from being in your shoes. |

I think Monte realizes all of this. If I recall correctly, he bought it for a little more than nothing, but a running, driving, '84 C4 is only worth a little more than nothing. Getting it running and driving again for the least amount of money would be the best course of action.
Monte, With all of the work you've tackled yourself already, I wouldn't think swapping engines would be much more. Even in a gravel driveway, you can rent a hoist and use plywood to roll it on. |

I know he realizes all this he is not a dummy for sure. I don't buy the gravel driveway part though, I've changed engines on gravel, grass, & plain old dirt. I used to have 3 long sections of pipe that I would put together to form a tripod and hang a chain hoist from that. I didn't have an engine hoist until I was married and in my own home. Where there's a will there's a way.

The shop up the road said if i found an engine, they would do the swap for me, the owner (who i met on Thursday) said he'd be back Monday and would let me know the price. The guy that was at the shop, who i also met while donkey chasing, said that i would be treated great.
We shall see, Just have to find a used motor or short block. My DIY plan is to hook a chain fall up in one of our trees, and hook the Vette up to the truck. Lift engine while i pull the car out from under it |

I'm guessing he's going to want, at least, $500 to do the swap. I don't think that's an unreasonable price, but, it's $500 more into the car.

Fastguy, been a while since Ive seen carnage that bad!
Last time was a friend with a pristine original..about 72 Z28 350/4 speed...his dad owned a repair shop and after school he went over, put it on the rack and remove the oil plug...it was draining, he gets a call...football practice was moved up an hour and he was late..so he goes to change into his stuff, asks one of the workers to drop it down and put oil back in it... Guy drops it down to the ground, goes to get some oil, comes back..car is long gone. He made it about a mile up the road, he dropped down a gear to merge onto the interstate..nailed it, BANG. They never found one of the pistons...but 3 of the others were in the pan, multiple holes in the block, one piston was so seized it could not be removed. The engine was on display in his waiting room..."why you check your oil"...lol |

Best advice for your current situation. Look for a truck engine, they usually are not run hard (raced) and are built to heavier duty standards. Quote:
Worst I've seen was back in the '70s when Nitrous was just starting to be used by street racers. I knew must have tried to run a 50/50 mix, (j/k). Nitrous was hand actuated and he kicked it in about 4k RPM. Snapped the crank and shoved the front half of the crank down through the oil pan. Cracked the block about 1/2 inch open at the failure point. It was a '71 440 Cuda with the factory 6 pack. His daddy had $$$ so when they replaced the engine they went with a 426 Hemi crate engine. |
