Talking I finally got to make something for myself

When I bought my 17" Craftsman drill press, the handle for raising the table was broken off. ( the previous owner broke it off and deducted $25 off the price )

I got tired of turning half a turn at a time with the broken handle so I made my own. I drilled a piece of 1" round bar and parted it off on the lathe 1" long. Drilled and tapped it for a set screw. The handle is a piece of 1/2" rod and the rotating handle is a 3/8" bolt, a piece of tubing and nut welded to the 1/2" rod. I added a washer reduce a pinch point

drill press

Various parts that make up the handle

old handle and replacement handle made out of metal

I happened to get just a bit of TIG weld into the threads and it works perfect as a "lock washer".

But when you're that good, sometimes it just works that way.

Nice work Jeff! It's more empowering that folks realize when you can machine something to fit a piece that is no longer manufactured.
I know next to zippo about lathes other than watching my FIL operate them here and there. It's on my bucket list to learn more about it as time permits.

Currently I'm busy improving my bass guitar playing, framing dimensional lumber into hip roofs, parenting 3 wild but fun kids etc....

Yes, it was one of those "my brilliance amazes me" moments

I make a "few" parts that Cub Cadet no longer manufactures. It helps keep them running and you get the satisfaction of "I made that"

What I've done so far.

Punched metal will go into the openings in the headboard.

In the words of Bob Ross “We don't make mistakes, just happy little accidents.”

Nice work on the handle.

It worked well too. I used my drill press to make this plow yoke for a Brinly mouldboard plow ( dirt plow )
