You think they are loud on a base with a 10K foot runway. Try it on a boat with them landing on one end and getting blasted off the front. Mickey Mouse ears did nothing for the noise.

At one point, I looked around and recounted, just from our squadron, the First Sgt retired due to a DUI, the Squadron Section OIC, a Captain, was caught falsifying leave paperwork, and the O-6 Commander was being black mailed by an underage hostess with the mostess. Of course, the black mail was unconfirmed but would not be a surprise to many. Outside the squadron: the Vice Wing Commander retired due to a DUI. These were all our leaders and leading from the front.

The enlisted were keeping it real too. An Airman getting kicked out for numerous violations. The interesting part, he was Airman of the Quarter and Year at the previous base. An NCO making rank the other way due to already getting an Article 15 and a suspended reduction in rank. At the Christmas party, he asked the O-6 Commander where he got the "hook". The "hook" had been married to the Commander for many years. The parting shot at the party was priceless, "What are you getting mad at? This one with me is a hooker too."

Actually a turbojet, and it is enormous. If you compare it to the earlier GE engines, its a behemoth. The J-85's in the FE5's make about 5,000 lbs of thrust each in burner, the J79 in the F4 is around 12,000 each.

Dude, that's just scratching the surface. There are many more stories including running from the SPs, theft, hazing, adultery and the list goes on.

Years ago when Myrtle Beach still had an airbase Warthogs would cruise low over the beach,once when we were there and up on the 18th floor of our motel we were out on the balcony and two Warthogs cruised by so low we could look down into the cockpit.

The last time I was in St. Louis, F-15 Eagles took off about every three minutes from the McDonnell-Douglas facility near the airport. Their engines make a unique sound, too.
