You are probably thinking of the F-14 Tomcats that Iran purchased from us before the fall of the Shah. I have read several places that the Grumman maintenance contractors that were in Iran as instructors for their air force might have sabotaged all (or most) of those F-14's on their way out of town.
I don't think any of them ever flew again.
Yeah. That's right. I remember the surveillance photos showing the Tomcats parked outside Iranian hangars.

I kinda get a kick out of North Korea too. They keep messing around, especially with South Korea. South Korea doesn't respond because, eventually, they would have to absorb North Korea. The South does not want to take that economic hit.

See my post above. Some are still operational but the PW-414 engines are a pain in the ass to maintain. F4's would be easier...and while it's one of my favorite jets ever, they're still slower than my dog Chuck and less maneuverable too.

I've spoken to a few ex-Grumman guys and was never able to confirm the sabotage story (doesn't mean it didn't happen tho).

I can't remember, did we sell those Tomcats to Iran with or without the Phoenix missiles and the radar that could kill multiple targets at the same time?

We sold them almost 300 missiles with the jets (it was a $2 billion order from the Shah), but they're out of them by now, and besides the Phoenix can now be easily jammed. They are at the end of their useful lives. They can also carry the AIM-7 Sparrow and AIM-9 Sidewinder, but those are of little effect.

To give you an idea, the F-14 would be mincemeat agains our F-15 Strike Eagles. A few years ago, they sent up five Strike Eagles against ONE F-22 during war games in the Gulf of Mexico. The F-22 driver had five kills, and the Eagle pilots never even saw the plane coming.

The Phantoms used twin GE J79 turbofans, right? The F-4's one of my favorite, too. A brutal, blunt instrument bristling to the gills with weaponry!

Loved her TIE fighter howl and thick, copious trails of black smoke they spewed in flight. Did you know there were proposals to name the F4H "Satan" and "Mithras", the Persian god of light?

In the end, the aircraft was given the less controversial name "Phantom II", the first "Phantom" being another McDonnell jet fighter, the FH-1 Phantom.

The Phantom II was briefly given the designation F-110A and the name "Specter" by the USAF, but neither name was used.

CEO Jim McDonnell was obsessed with the occult and gave nearly all his military aircraft demonic and supernatural names.

I heard Double Ugly on the box of a model kit I built some time around the invention of fire. Same box explained the Wild Weasel sorties and the lack of a gun.

I like the Phantom because it's the one real aircraft that looks like it could be in Star Wars just as it sits.

Mofo sounds like it could, too. Love the TIE fighter-esque howl of those J79's and shit.

With those howling J79's, that mofo wails like a TIE Fighter, too!

I built that joker, too. In fact, I had the entire Revell (four F4E Thunderbirds in formation) edition model kit.

I saw them perform in 1978 over Godman Army Airfield at Fort Knox and I haven't been the same since! My Dad bought that kit for my for my 13th birthday.

We put a few of them to their final resting places during weapons tests with the ESSM and the Mk45M4.

It was a little odd shooting at a legend.

Just because I like F-4's, here is one of the few still operational by the USAF. And Chef, they are too faster than your dog Chuck!! Yeah, the Iranians couldn't hit water if they fell out of a F'n boat!!
