Humana doesn’t sell individual plans any longer. That’s why they pointed you to the exchange. Other health plans still sell individual, off-exchange plans.

With your income level, a health plan is always going to point you to the exchange because it’s financial advantageous for you…but more importantly, it’s financially advantageous for them. It’s like a section 8 landlord. Yeah, maybe that landlord has to put up with some bullshit…but that payment from the gov comes right on time, every time.

If you were opposed to the subsidy, there are ways for you to be insured without it. Having said that, given your current financial situation and your medical history, accepting a subsidized plan is a smart financial decision for you.

I realize your use of “pretty much” gives you wiggle room in the conversation. And I assume you will use it.
Well like I said we went through this exercise not too long ago, and Humanoid couldn’t find any traditional insurance off the exchange, post up a link of the company you use.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not opposed to the subsidy, but once on the exchange when you reconcile your taxes at the end of the year you are forced to take it, so it’s either upfront or at the end of the year.

As I mentioned, like two years ago we tried to find traditional health insurance off the exchange and we came up with very little, just short term stuff and that HSA type crap. If there are numerous companies offering it now then it’s something fairly recent.

EDIT: I just did a Google search, health insurance plans, and the first seven or so hits are all Obamacare companies or spin.

Yeah, things have changed quite a lot since the ACA was first implemented…mostly out of sheer necessity because the ACA was an implementation disaster.

Yep I remember that lol

I just went directly on Florida blue Cross to price out an individual plan and this question popped up, so if it’s an actual plan off the exchange why are they asking me about assistance?

Well it’s a moot point anyway, if I were able to find comparable health insurance off the exchange, given my salary why would I want to pay more for the same type of coverage? Only an idiot would choose to pay more, don’t hate the player hate the government, they ****ed up healthcare I’m just playing by the rules.

I like HSA's.
I had one at my former employer, and still have about $2700 in it.
I wish I had an HSA at my current employer.

Obamacare hosed us and basically forced my wife and I to separate policies.

Money, money, money.

They are asking if you want to see if you qualify because its financially advantageous for the health plan to steer you towards a subsidized plan.

It is a nightmare for the HPs to manage off-exchange, individual plans where they are collecting the premiums themselves. People that don't pay on time are especially hard to manage because there is a grace period before they get cancelled. Pay during that grace period and you get retro activated back to the last paid month. So, you have this portion of the off-exchange population that constantly yo-yo between active, grace period, about to cancel, paid, not paid, cancelled, retro'ed. And for HMO members, who need referral to see most specialists, it's an even bigger nightmare during that whole "didn't pay/grace period/maybe I'll pay/maybe I won't" group.

You will always be steered towards exchange plans as an individual, with the potential for subsidy being the incentive (for you and them). That's just the nature of the beast.

I get it. I am on board with you. I do agree that it would be a bad financial decision for you not to accept the exchange plan.

In fact, you would have to jump thru hoops and actively seek an off-exchange plan (as you have seen), which may not even be as good of coverage as you have now. In fact, it probably would not be as good. It just doesn't make sense for you to spend the time and money to intentionally seek out an off-exchange plan.

Truth. And spoken by a baller. The multiple properties purchased in San Francisco decades ago by family members who saw the big picture has worked out for you. Not a bad spot to be in, IMO.
