interesting thread.

still have a Nikon F5 and F4 bodies, but haven't run film thru them in years. mostly use my iphone for casual pix, will haul out my D80 if it's a more serious shot.

no idea what to do with those camera bodies...sigh...

I remember my first experience with Scitex in Dallas way back. We were doing a catalog cover with a home exterior and I don't even remember what we were going to fix, but they told me to shoot transparencies and they'd put it on a Hell scanner and then digitally retouch it the way I wanted it. Back them everyone referred to it as "The System" "We'll just put it on the The System"

The computer was so slow I could have fixed the glitch with my airbrush on a print in about an hour and this thing had to process overnight. There's no way I'd have thought that 30 years later folks like the lady doing the church bulletin would be retouching photos.

A few years ago I picked up a Honeywell Pentax in a pawn shop in Reno for $20. I've never used it, but it was identical to the one I used to check out in high school photo class and I just wanted to have it.

They also had a drum scanner (which was always getting newton rings) and a film imaging machine that would give weird color crosses... typically had a magenta/green cross.

Glad those days are way behind us now...

It is a shame that my Canon A-1 is now so obsolete you can buy them by the dozens on ebay. I bought it my senior year in High School (79) and have used it up until about 5 years ago. I love the immediacy of digital. I do manipulate photos. I keep the original always because quite honestly, I only manipulate photos I feel are worthy in the first place. I agree they are no longer "photos" but they still have their beauty. I use manipulation 99% of the time for restoration of "dead" photos. 1% to adjust a new photo. I focus (no pun intended) on taking a good picture in the first place and that allows me to appreciate both avenues of expression.

edit: My avatar is an example. I like the original as well as what you see. I removed all the color and put back the blue. Nothing else was done aside from cropping.

I wish someone would design a digital camera back that fit on the old SLRs. I love my A-1. Bought it new in 1983 - have 7 or 8 FD lenses, motor drive, and SunPak 555 flash unit. Now all sitting collecting dust.

IIRC they did make digital backs for camera's like the Hasselblad.
True... and I figured that. Just wishful thinking. To purchase a DLSR that has the same capabilities (and probably more) of my camera would cost $$$. At least they make an adapter for the FD lenses to still be useful with the EOS systems.

But digitally manipulated, composited, retouched, perfected, glimmering "creations" aren't photos. They are artwork.
WTF are you talking about, does this look manipulated to you.

My wife is taking some photography classes and pursuing a career in photography. She is on her 4th class and they have yet to do anything with a digital camera. Everything has been on film. She also works part-time doing editing for a local photographer. From what I gather...If you want to be a true photographer/artist, use film. If you want to make money at it, use a dslr and editing software and give people what they want.

I also see a alot of "facebook photographers" popping up. My wife knows one, a former friend of hers. When asked, she couldn't even recall which model her Nikon camera was At this point, my wife is just doing some newborn photographer for friends and family. She doesn't make a pfofit, and each session she does costs me about $50-100 in props and new gear
