I hate work travel. (rant)

I absolutely DESPISE traveling for work. Trying to anticipate what they will and won't approve for expenses, being in a new city and not seeing a damn thing, being more or less trapped in the hotel. On top of that, they left me with a suitcase of tradeshow stuff to bring back with me and the damn thing is 5 pounds over limit.
I had to stuff my carry on (backpack) to the absolute limit and I doubt it will fit under the seat like it did on the way here. I'm in group 5 board g a full plane so no overhead I'm sure. I HATE WORK TRAVEL. I get in at 1:00 am and have to work tomorrow.

I don't mind it. I travel every week out of IAH and am now used to it.

I liked it a lot as a younger man, even if we only went to exotic venues like Evansville Indiana. I got over to French Lick and toured Larry Bird's hometown, and there was a bar downtown that put on a free potluck dinner every evening for paying customers. I expensed a lot of beer and pool games on my per diem.

Traveling within the US I would agree, it sucks. Outside the US, it's awesome!

I really enjoyed work travel, get the precheck and all the rewards programs and the traveling is a breeze.

Being 6'5" 255 lbs, I hate long airplane rides.
Business travel ? I never did it, so I couldn't say, but I'd probably hate it too.

I spent nearly 30 years traveling internationally. The Asian airlines are the best.

I had a job that I traveled about every two weeks. At first it was either within the US or Canada.

Then they asked me to go to Israel. I told them I wouldn't go there. They got all puffy about it... then found someone else to go; never mentioned it again.

I haven't been on a plane in over a year. Don't really miss the travel. However, the current gig won't last forever, and I might have to start flying again.

i used to travel every week for business, almost always via a plane to some place i didn't want to go. got old after a few years.

yeah, 6-5 is not the ideal size for coach class.

now i don't have to go anywhere i don't want to.

Agree, this helps alot. I'm 1k on United and have a club lounge membership. It can still be a grind but those perks help lessen it.

If there is opportunity to enjoy it, I might. I mean I could probably adapt to an extra day in each location for my own time. In this latest trip, I was up at 4:30, out of the house at 5:30, on a plane and took an Uber car to the tradeshow, back to the hotel with a very expensive restaurant that I knew I could not expense, so I ended up walking to McDonald's, back to the hotel to respond to emails (my regular job still had to be done), up the next morning, back to the tradeshow again. I landed after midnight last night, got home and in bed around 2:00 and had to work today.
I squeezed in about 45 minutes of time to go down to the Navy Pier and snap some pics since I haven't been there in about 15 years. By the way, as a nostalgia fan, the pier was disappointing. It has been reduced to a barren mall. A few eateries with food that looked like it had been sitting all day, a few bars and souvenir shops. The original Navy Pier sign has been moved and now marks the entrance to a beer garden. Progress is not always a positive.
