Default I cleaned it up and now know what it is
It is a French model 1845 Infantry Adjutant's sword, and was made in 1879.

Because it was a rusted up mess. My dad had it stored in the basement of his house on Cap Cod for a while, humid salt air, and practically destroyed it. The inscription was completely hidden.

Post 2 has a link to an identical one that was sold. It is in much better shape than mine and the inscription is completely intact, unlike mine which is work off from the manufactured date and back.

Already did it. A few minutes in Muriatic, rinse, scrub with a green scotch brite, rinse- did that about five times. Then water and baking soda. Then CLR on the brass. Then barkeepers helper on everything (oxalic acid). Then more baking soda, then scrubbed down with WD40 and 0000 steel wool. Finished up with a polish on my cotton buffer wheel and white abrasive.

My mother was pissed- we had just moved into the neighborhood. She chased me around the block and could not catch me.

About 15 years ago a guy one year older than me approached her in a supermarket and asked her is she was my mom. He then asked her if I still had the sword that I had chased him with. He told her that he never bullied anyone after that.

He didn't steal anything from me. He was just a big fat turd who like to push younger, much smaller kids around. He was bullying several of us and when it came to my turn, I taught him a lesson that he never forgot. In fact it made him into a better person.

This dimple on the blade looks like it was a hit from a sword point. On the backside you can see where the metal was torn. That and the gouges on the edge makes me think that it has seen actual combat.
