WTF is with OIL FILTERS???
I have not messed with much in the way of newer cars, thankfully, but wife's daughter/my stepdaughter has a 2011 Corolla Toy, and the the 1.8 liter engine....the oil filter is housed in a permanent aluminum housing on the engine block, and the thing is capped with some stupid black plastic screw on LID, that will not come off, even with the little stupid metal stopper removed, tried the ten buck wrench, talked to a guy at Jiffy Lube and apparently ALL new cars have done the same stupid thing.....just WTF was so RONG with a freeking PH5 oil filter they have to make 500 different filters?? a 5 buck filter is all of a sudden a 45 dollar plastic cap, a 5 buck actual filter element, and a whole lot of grief.......much less the price of this so called ZERO weight synthetic OIL??? 5 quartz for 30 bux???
Just WHAT is this stupid crap supposed to accomplish other than rip off the public?? I see a HUGE market for some smart aftermarket company in making adapters for a PH5 type spin on filter for these stupid assed modern engines... Filtering OIL takes so much modern engineering already..... |

The Mustang and Tacoma take standard Oil Filters, I'm not sure what the wife's Subaru takes...it has free oil changes for another year so the dealer takes care of it. I do know what you are talking about though. I actually just bought a case of Toyota Oil filters through Amazon for 50 bucks...Toyota OEM.
As far as the Zero weight oil, I usually buy it by the case. I bought two cases of Kendall 0w-20 through Petroleum Service Company online, so I am still whittling away on that. I'm going to be due for another case or two soon, so I'll either get the Kendall, or watch for a sale on Toyota oil at the local dealer. It's usually about 90 bucks a case for the Toyota oil. I use Ford Motorcraft Syn-Blend in the Mustang, it's 5 weight and not that pricey... Walmart Supertech 0w-20 is about 5 bucks a quart, I priced it over the weekend. If you are looking to save a few dollars. I'm sure it's just fine. |

Goofy cartridge filter on the SOs Chrysler van, accessed thru the top of
the engine block. Plastic nut, about 30mm or so because everthing's metric, adjustable wrench works just fine. $7.00 for a Napa Gold, or most other brands for a paper roll filter. $23.00 for 5 quarts of Pennzoil full synthetic 5w20 at Meijer. My Escape still has the spin-on type filter, but I do believe this type will be the minority in the future. All in the name of fuel economy (oil weight wise) |

My wife's RAV4 had a dumb-ass built-in filter housing.
I no longer change the oil on it. Let a quick lube place deal with the absurdity and giant mess. My F-150 is easy-peasy. Takes me about 30 minutes INCLUDING the trip into town to the auto parts store for oil, and the trip back with my used oil. No mess, I get oil in the catch-can and on my disposable gloves, that's it. |

Bad knees & hips, along with general arthritis pains from aging led me to give up oil changes & general maintenance on our vehicles several years ago, so these new filters will remain an unknown to me.
I actually miss doing that sort of thing. I had a Bendpak lift (sold), would put on some music, open a beer or 3, & change the oil in our cars. I think it bothers me because it's just more proof & evidence that I'm getting old. Still, it beats NOT getting older! |

I used to enjoy doing the oil changes on my Blazers....didn't need to even jack them up as I could fit right underneath
The Vette......not so much never did one on it. |

I still do all of my oil changes/tire rotations while I still can. The '85 corvette gets it done every-other year, so this year it's due. I only drive 100 to 300 miles a year, not used very much. The Escape, Harley, and SOs Chrysler T&C are rather easy to do. The Corvette. 4 years ago, the filter was on so tight, that I wrenched the oil cooler adapter right off the block with the filter still attached. What a freaking mess. the majority of the coolant ran out all over the garage floor. Now, C4s are not easy to raise up and support (damn I miss full rail frames). Maybe a foot up from ground level, I can barely get underneath, and I am not that large. At my age, crawling under there is getting to be rather tough. Once I'm on my back, I need to roll off the creeper onto the floor, and push myself up. Just can't do the sit-up from the creeper anymore. So, taking this into consideration, that Chrysler Filter Cartridge accessible from the engine bay top is nice. |
