Default March 2014 Photo Subject

Black and white.

Any subject, but some photos just look better in B/W. Any gear, take it this month. Get out and have fun shooting!

Post as many as you want to in this thread. But, make sure they were taken this month to avoid confusion.

Just taken earlier tonight. The original one in color below as well...not sure how well the BW works for this particular image. I'm sure I will shoot a few more this month.

I was trying for 'film noir'. I don't think it is dark or gritty enough? I just don't like noise or grain in a photo though...

I think you did a nice job here, I'm with you on the Noise Grain as well...every time I use it I look at the image and it kind of looks like a mistake (Like my ISO was too high). All person taste though IMO.

My interpretation of Film Noir is typically hard light, with a lot of contrast.

For instance this shot of Rita; Film Noir Dalmatian. (It's a big pic but worth the click I think)

Have you tried converting that pic to B&W? It's the perfect subject for it.

I think it is over exposed for noir? It is b/w, but with a blue filter over it. The taillights would be red, and the emblem, etc..Maybe, I should do away with the filter for pure b/w?

I think it is probably too over exposed for noir?
I might not think in terms of overall exposure as much as a lot of contrast between the light and dark areas.

I took a bunch of shots of the dog to get what I was after. I wanted her eyes exposed correctly and a dramatic transition from light to dark.

I think even if you dropped the exposure on your shot, it would just be a darker shot with basically the same contrast. I'm doing a horseshit job explaining what I think of when I think Film Noir ain't i?

I'll google some noir images and play with it.

If you're using Photoshop, here's a slick method for converting to B/W using adjustment layers: 2 Minute Photoshop Tricks Guide: Convert to Black and White Using Adjustment Layers - Step by Step

If you're like me and grew up shooting B/W film using color filters, you'll really like this method.
