some athletes do have NIL deals and make various amounts of money. most don't. some athletes share their deals with their team mates (USC's QB made sure all his team mates got something from his deal, i think some fancy head phones). some parade their bodies on social media and have deals with companies (gymnast Olivia Dunne comes to mind recently). but most just get a free college education in some field that suits their game and practice schedule.

Yes that is pretty new and wrong in many eyes. Although one could argue that NIL is a perk not a payment for services. It’s the pay for service that makes one a professional by definition.
