Yesterday my son and I did just under 14,000 vertical and a distance of 22 miles in about 2 hours.

Actually yes. A 7 mile wind heading to Newport Beach and on the way back it switched to about 15 mph which is common for the wind to switch. But the wind is usually 2-7 mph.
