Default [Woodworking] The Biden Bowl (or the bowl of uncertainty)

Wandered down to the shop, it was still on the lathe, so i turned the lathe on low speed, and noticed that the bowl now has a wobble.

when i turned it about 2 months ago, it was fairly wet wood, so it has obviously dried somewhat since then, and as a result, it is now a somewhat oblong or elliptical bowl, and not a circular bowl.

So i'm dubbing it the Biden Bowl: it's small, crooked, and dark.

took it off the lathe, sanded the bottom, plugged the screw holes, and now have to wait for the glue to dry. i'll give it all day. then final sanding and apply the finish (food safe, same as i use on cutting boards).

pic below:

will get it to Raazor at some point.

Thank God I didn't win.
I thought that it was gonna be a bowl, not an ash tray.
I was set to throw some serious dinero at it if I had won.
I'm filing a lawsuit to overturn the decision.

You have some serious talent there Doug.

what exactly do you want for nothing?

now, if you'd like to commission something, we can talk. but my lathe is not a big lathe, so size is somewhat constrained. further, i got these bowl blanks last year for about $5 each, and they are only 5x5x2, so it's tough to make a bowl bigger than the blank you started with.

I'm just being a sore loser and fk'n with you .
The wood has a beautiful grain and looks to have turned very nicely.

along the grain, it's 5-1/2" diameter

across the grain, it's 5-3/8" diameter

as i knew, it was pretty wet wood when i turned it. you'll only notice it if you measure it.

If the sex change doctors can turn an innie into an outie, you should be able to turn a small piece of wood into a large bowl. C'mon, man!

I mean, yeah, you'll lose a little bit on each sale, but you'll make up for it in volume!

oh, that is possible, same idea of making a cutting board out of many smaller pieces.

but you cannot glue 2 wet pieces of wood together and expect them to stay together.

I have a similar problem with my woodworking skills. I am good at cutting pieces of wood smaller, but have not yet figured out how to cut them bigger. So, for the most part, I take perfectly good lumber, and continually cut it into smaller pieces that don't fit right, so I cut them a little smaller, and then they are too small. I try to use those pieces for smaller pieces of the project than the original attempt, but I usually sooner or later cut it too small for that piece too. At the end of the day, my "woodworking hobby" turns mostly into cutting perfectly good lumber into tiny pieces of waste, and heading back to the lumber yard for more wood.
