My guess is the carb's gummed up. How long did it sit before you tried to crank it?

My pressure washer does this every year. It's always the same thing. The bolt on the bowl is gummed up. I take the carb apart and clean the holes in that bolt with a paper clip. Put it back together and it fires right up.

Usually a gas feed problem through the carb if it will start and then die.

Put some SeaFoam in the gasoline every once-in-a-while.

I cleaned the existing air filter that was dirty as shit and swapped out the plug Monday and nothing. The gas is fine as its a month old. The mower has been acting up latley though. I am going to check out the carb tonight and see where that gets me.

Does it fire at all? Might verify you're getting spark by touching the plug to something metal on the mower and pulling the cord and watching for spark.

If it is you might spray starter fluid on the plug and a squirt in the plug hole.

It fires and turns over for two seconds and stalls out.

Definitely starting to sound like a problem with the carb.

Once you get it running, don't do squat to it for at least 8-10 years.

Leave it outside uncovered all year long through below zero temps to 100 plus days.

I wheeled my '89 Murray 5hp B&S motored machine down to the curb this spring. Two slow pulls on the cord to get the oil where it needed to be, then VROOM!

YMMV

Edit: I think lawn mowers are manly machines and they don't like to be babied. IMHO

The damn ethanol ruins the rubber hoses and diaphragms in the older mowers...Newer machines have materials that can tolerate ethanol.

There was shit in the fuel tank. Running fine now. After 6 years it was time for a tune up anyway.

Cleaned up the tank, changed the oil, new air filter, new plug, cleaned up the carb a bit and the 6.5hp Briggs and Stratton is running fine.

Now, keep it outside. That's the "fine" tuning!

YMMV
