Premade tuning
Hi all,
Two of the 'easy to use' tuners that I've found are the Diablo and the SCT. They can both be loaded with custom tunes that a tuner can email to you. However, my understanding is that the Diablo will not hold the OEM tune in memory before loading in another tune curve, whereas the SCT will, is that correct? When I had my Mustang, I was ready to pull the trigger on the SCT for that reason, but that was Ford based, and not GM. Can anybody confirm whether or not my assumption is correct? Are the tunes that are available through those programmers any good? A lot of people swear by them. Also, are there tuner vendors on here that I can support by getting one of their tunes for my car? I'd really like the option of storing my original configuration as a file and if I need to, I can just reload that back into the car. This is my only transportation, so sending my ECM out is not an option. Any help or info would be greatly appreciated!! Paul |

Hi Paul,
What year is your car? Auto or 6 speed? This will help determine what you should use. I am an SCT and Diablosport dealer, but use HPtuners or EFIlive for the GM cars. They're much better on the GM cars, by far. I can get you setup with an HPtuners cable if you're interested. If you're looking for a PCM to swap in/out, I can set you up with that as well. I keep a bunch of different ones in stock at all times.

It's a 2007, base convertible with 6-speed stick. I'm planning within the next year to replace (upgrade) the intake and axle-back exhaust. I've heard that the others (HPTuners, EFIlive, etc.) were very hard to use and required that the person doing the install/tune be much more familiar with the actual maps than what is required for the 'box tunes' like the Diable or SCT. You say that those others are "better on the GM cars, by far", can you clarify? How are they better? I don't mind researching and learning more about how these things work (and maybe even make a few mods of my own), but since this is my only transportation at the moment (!) I'm reluctant to do anything that is out of the ordinary or more complicated than "plug-n-play". If you can convince me that this is the better way to go, I'll certainly give it a try. How much of an outlay am I looking at to get this done? Tunes, and tools to install? Thanks again and sorry for the newb questions! Cheers, Paul |

Hi Paul,
HPT and EFIlive have much better scanners than either DS or SCT. Again, by far. I use all of them, I can say this from experience. The scanner alone is worth the extra money. The edit software is also better. You being a newb and buying canned tunes, it probably won't matter much to you, at least at this point. But down the road, as you learn, if you want to learn, it will give you far more control to do more advanced things, make more changes on your own. HPTuners is probably the most reasonable price wise, and you get enough credits to tune like 4 cars. So, if you have a buddy or two that need some small adjustments, codes turned off, etc., you can sell them a "license" for 100 bucks, and recoup some of your money. I can sell you a cable, with a starter tune, for 649.00. Same as anyone selling them. Advantage buying from me is the starter tune, and support. If you have any questions about me or my ability, feel free to search my screen name on any of the boards, and just ask around. Everyone knows who I am. Let me know if I can help. |
