Curious - what kind of PC/Video card is driving those monitors? Oh, lets not to forget the power supply.

I have a TI-55ii that I used for most of my college in the 80's. Found it out in garage just now, put new batteries in it, no worky. Looks like it succumbed to the dread keypad failure they were famous for. Prior to that I had a TI-30 that actually made a high-pitched whine when you used it and would get hot, and I mean hot, when charging or using for extended periods of time. It had exactly enough programming capability for you to just put in the quadratic equation. I thought it was awesome.

And did she commandeer both desks in a two person dorm room?

Or did she get the second desk from a Liberal Arts major who won't be needing it?

Home safe and sound, no thanks to Mother Nature. Storm in Port Charlotte on way down I-75 was blinding for about 30 minutes. Towing in the rain sucks. Slowing down to 45 MPH to stay alive is always a good decision.

I have 3 GForce GTX 1070's running 12 monitors. The rest run off of J5 Create USB to HDMI adapters.

Those are standard in every room. I fabricated the riser/bridge that spans the entire setup to support the monitors. She'll likely sell that at the end of her time there.

I like how you have ALL those flat screens - but yet there is an old CRT TV hanging on the wall in the background!

You're about the 3rd person to say that. I never watch TV, ever. Haven't used that TV in about 10 years. Just too lazy to take it down.

I still have a working commodore 64.

I gotta ask; do all those monitors significantly increase your productivity? Significantly. Not simply 'I like it.'

Regarding your daughters dorm; Do the other students have a set-up like this?

I'll answer.
No, no they don't.
Total overkill.
Even in the Wiz's job it's overkill, but for a student? Totally un-needed.
A laptop is sufficient for a student. 4 or 5 screens for the Wiz would be sufficient imo, even though I haven't the slightest idea what he does.
Why do they do it??? Because they can.

Thomas, I use every single monitor every single day. Every monitor has an application (email, family chat, calendar, ....) on it. When I get an alert, I simply turn my head and don't have to hunt to find what just happened. GWiz and I have mastered the productivity benefits of having setups like this and we run with it. Will I ever have more than 18? No. Will GWiz have more than 8? Absolutely. We don't do this because it makes a cool picture for the internet, we do this because it makes us extremely more productive.

Case in point, GWiz mentioned while she was in South Carolina this summer on intern, that she had 4 at work, and only 3 at the room she rented and it was killing her in productivity. (She left last semester having 6). When you adopt what we do, and why we do it, it makes perfect sense.

Now she has 8, and that will be the max until she graduates. After that, it's on her to add more, but I can GUARANTEE she will add more.

We get paid for our time and our brains. Hunting through 100 windows on 1 monitor doesn't work.

Jeff, you don't get it.

I have the means to give her 18 monitors, because I can. She has 8, because she needs it to be effective at what she does. You know she's a high achiever, your post is indicative of the fact you have no clue why we do (and have) what we have. For anyone to think that my 18 is overkill, you are a moron. I make the bloody money I make because I'm extremely good at what I do. That setup facilitates that situation. GWiz has mastered the same gene.

I have 2 monitors at work with 15 different windows open at any given time.
Does it really take you that much more time to look at a monitor and click on the window that you want, as opposed to craning your neck and clicking on a particular monitor?
C'mon.....

Jeff, just for you, maybe one of these days I'll video tape myself from behind so you can see me interact with all 18. I understand that this is a leap for you, but trust me, if I could have more, I would. My 18 are constantly filled. I work 14-18 hours every day and literally have 100+ windows open. If I had 1 monitor, my job would take me another 4-5 hours per day.

You don't scoff at 2 or 3 monitors that most here might have, why does the number matter? GWiz and I are insane multi-taskers, with the ability to handle lots of inputs. Why judge? Even with my 18, I still have 8,10, even 20 windows open on 1 single monitor. Not sure where using technology to make you better is a bad thing.

My daughter is a high achiever and will have an MD degree in less than 8 months.
She uses a laptop
You're a moron if you think that you can bullshit everyone into thinking that you're not smart or efficient enough to operate with 5 monitors or even less.
Total overkill, because you can.
Hell, my BIL was in a hedge fund and didn't use more than 5. My BIL made way more bloody money than you ever will, and still does. With 5 !
Hey... Whatever blows your hair back......
