Is that piston and rod in the lower left corner from one of dad's expensive misadventures?

I remember my dad had an ash tray made out of a huge aircraft piston. Probably a Rolls Royce because he worked on those during the 50s. I don't know whatever happened to it. Wish I still had it. It was sliced in half right at the wrist pin. Made a nice cradle for a pipe or cigar.

I traded a calculator (and some cash) for a Commodore 64 in 1986 in my first year of college. This insane technical obsession I have started then. The next year I bought $10,000 of computer equipment, including a scanner, color dot matrix printer, Laser Jet printer and a 386 computer with 16MB of memory. That's when I learned I could write this stuff off of my taxes as a small business owner. That huge expense was a big gamble, and it's what created who I am today.

I have a Radio Shack Calculator from the early 70s. It is in the original vinyl folder/sleeve with the original instruction manual. Cat No. 65-851, model EC 440. It has no battery and it is solar powered. It's a basic four function calculator.
It was my Dad's calculator and it was in his briefcase he used when he sold real estate part time in the late 60s/early 70s. May dad had died in 1990 and the briefcase had not been opened since at least that year. I came into possession of it in '04 when my mom died. I pulled it out of the briefcase, turned it on and it worked. Solar powered and in the dark for 14+ years. I just went and got it from where I keep it. It probably has not had the sleeve opened in around ten years. It still worked. I wonder if it's worth anything? |

i didn't think it was that old....i was on job #3 of my illustrious career at that point, i must have had some $$$ laying around to buy a new calculator at that point. also says 'made in China'.. but i was told there would be no math. but if that changes, i'm ready..... |

I gave it to my StepDad as he worked for TI when it was built. He was part of the team that developed the chips to make it work. I gave him the calculator, both books/manuals plus the cover, charger and the box. My Mom said he was like a little kid at Christmas when he opened it |
