Default To flask, or not to flask

At month's end I am attending a dood's, he may be family, wedding.

I heard open bar will be brief, as some on the list cannot control their intake.
Also heard the bar will remain open, but payment-in-full required at time of service--very swanky hotel on ocean, they may charge like $5/beer and $6/booze, and may want a tip.

So, I can load up while free, but that is not my style, I like to pace myself.
I think the best plan is to drink at a pace until the free spout stops, then break out the flask, of which I have yet to purchase.

Then again, if I break out a flask, how did I keep the other cheap bastards from asking for a hit.

Please advise, and / or give tales of your consumptions at weddings.

Lastly, what is the preferred flask for wedding, as those pyrex ones take a lot of space.

On such occasions if I was spending the night at said hotel, I had a bottle and set ups in my room and would go there, make a drink, and stroll back. It also allows you to drink more without any concern for driving.

Keep a pint under the seat in your car. Once the open bar stops, order soda or whatever non-alcoholic refreshment you wish and take it outside to "doctor" it. Keep a one-hitter filled with purple sticky bud next to the flask. You'll find the evening much more bearable.

My b-i-l will have his yacht in the marina at the hotel, my sister has ordered a catered service, they have a booze cabinet in the salon.

Problem with going down there is I probably would not return to the reception, as the boat is much more fun than a roomful of stiffies.
I considered a room, but there are probably $1,000/night, and I may leave early to get home to our dogs, my house is about 20 minutes away for me, 40 minutes for everyone else.

I am thinking a couple or three drinks when free, a flask hidden from the moochers, one trip to the boat, and then off to see the doggies.

Only problem with above is the wifey has stated I better not bail early,,, she likes to be one of the last to leave.

Don't use a flask, use a 20 oz. soda bottle. The cheap bastards will think you're drinking Coke.

Or, better still, don't go to a wedding where you have to get druink to enjoy yourself.

In that case, inform your wife that she will be the designated driver that evening and that, if she needs you, you will most likely be on the boat enjoying yourself.

Thanks, the soda bottle may work, but been a long, long time since I did Jack and coke.

I have to go, cannot predict the level of fun to be had, so I need to have an outlet.

I have a better plan. Skip the wedding and go to a bar of your choosing.

But for flasks, I have the perfect solution as this worked for me when I had to wear my Dress Blue Uniform in the Army.

You want something flat with a slight curve so you can keep it on the inside pocket of your suit coat if you wear one. If not, you can easily tuck it in under your belt like a CCW weapon.

Anybody who asks for a hit off the flask or reaches for it gets a broken hand at a minimum.

Put your single malt into the bottle and add a little food coloring to darken it. Voila! Looks like Coke without any actual Coke.

Get hammered off of various hidden airline-sized bottles well before the event and tell your date/wife/spouse to take an uber.

Whiskey and ice tea look very much alike.

Just sayin'

How about this plan, scotch does not need ice, or to be cold, maybe a few droplets of water to open it up, SO, I just go to the free bar and order 12 glasses,,, I hope it ain't JW Red?!?!?

Hopefully they have a The Balvenie 12-year, or any Ardbeg.

Just sneeze into the flask and state loudly you no longer have a sense of smell since you caught COVID - guarantee nobody will want a hit...

I don't drink much, but I was young once. First, while you're still in your car, discreetly do a few shots that you know will get you to your desired state of hammeredness (tm). So you'll walk in completely sober, be able to exchange pleasantries, and then begin your buzz. If you, in fact, need to keep drinking during the event to maintain, then yes, why not carry a flask? Order a soft drink at the bar, then discreetly pour out whatever it is and pour in your libation of choice over the ice. This is why God invented indoor plants.

If you're a simple rum and Coke kind of guy, you don't even really have to pour anything out, just add and swirl.

Finally, have designated driver, and realize that if you get stopped, you still have an open container, so you don't want to give an officer any reason to search you.

Thank you for coming to my Ted talk.

I would say that using a flask is pretty low-brow. I've been drinking heavily since 1967 and have never resorted to using a flask.

Having said that, $6 for a mixed drink? That's not bad at all. From your description of the place I'm betting they'll be a lot more than $6, like maybe double or more.

I've not been to a wedding in over 20 years, despite having several of them in my family since then. The extravagance is a turn-off, especially considering so many couples break up in a few years anyway. The last two I went to (non-family) I never got so much as a thank you for the gift, and not even any acknowledgement that they even got it.

And nobody will likely remember if you were there or not. My great-niece got married about 10 years ago, and her dad said to me last Christmas something like: "Hey, do you remember Brittany's wedding where . . . " I reminded him that I wasn't even there. The marriage has been kaput for several years now.
