Pretty sure I just got scammed.

Never thought it would happen to me, but they finally got me. No more buying crap off FB. They are really getting good. I posted on one of my hot rod sites that Im looking for a 37 Chevy grill. A guy posts his "friends" phone number who supposedly has one. I call and leave a message. A few minutes later he texts me pics of the grill and a price. I also bought a pair of tail lights he showed in the pics. I paid thru Paypal, but used friends and family to avoid seller charges. (something fairly normal to do). $446 dollars later and Im pretty sure they got me.

I tried to message the original guy who gave me the phone number but no response.

The bitch of it is.....its not so much losing the money, it's the disappointment in not getting these hard to find parts.....

one thing to try... and that is to require the "seller" to send you an invoice through PayPal; and then pay that.

You still might get scammed... but the Paypal invoicing setup makes it more difficult to get away with a scam; many bogus sellers will not do the PP Invoice routine.

I have just about HAD it with any internet purchases, unless it be a large known company......I am in middle of getting credits back on a card that are ALL SCREWED UP, and the action is SO bad the wait times on trying any phone calls are a sad JOKE.....then the bank calls back with an unknown number and so I don't answer, thinking it is one of the TWO DOZEN bullshit calls I get per DAY!!!!

IKR!? Im usually smarter than this. I usually ask for a new photo with something proving the current date. I have scared off a few like that. But this time I was kinda tag teamed. The guy who posted the phone # must have hacked another account (now I see why they do this) who was a member of the car site I use. So there was a feeling of trust. Got me good this time, but I promise there will NOT be a second time...

This is why you got hosed. The 'hook' is always the shortcut or the cheat out of the longer, harder, more expensive way, which makes it attractive until you get burnt. Have seen it 1000 times in my 25+ years in automotive law enforcement. Had you gone legit on the payment would it have been refundable?

Had a guy try to sell me a D44 there. Tje picture looked really familiar. Come to find out, it was a scam. He was using other persons pics.. very fast to respond and try to get payment.

I haunt FB MP and certain group pages for stuff. I would agree to buy and pay the extra fees to avoid PP FF. FF was good to start with several yrs., ago before the scammers kicked it into high gear. I've only bought a couple of things that were not local to me though.

Another scary thing is someone messaged me one time asking why I had multiple accounts. I replied I only had one and they messaged me back with a link. Someone stole my profile pic, info, etc...and setup another account! Whatever they were up to had my photo and info associated with it! Scary stuff if you think about what illegal things they could have been doing with it.

I purchased my '96 via Facebook Marketplace, but I verified that it was advertised on a few additional sights before making a deal. I spoke with the guy on the phone multiple times, overnighted a Bank Check and he overnighted the title right after that. Arranged shipping etc. Pretty seamless transaction and the car was as advertised.

I just got ripped off on eBay, but with their Money Back Guarantee, it ended up ok. Won an auction for a set of ANR Aviation Headsets, seller had zero feedback. Paid, and never heard back from the person. Had to open a case, but it worked out in my favor.
