Default What would the barn do? 340 for my Charger

A guy on line in Dallas is selling a complete (all accessories mounted including carb, air cleaner, AC compressor...everything) 340 engine, just like it sat in the car.

He wants $1000.00 and claims it ran when pulled out.

340s are hard to find. Thermoquad carbs (love them or hate them) are also hard to find.

This is a 73 so it is an anemic version. 240HP although articles of the time state it is a lower than actual HP rating.

I have a 340 that needs built and my thoughts were, I can pick the best block and best heads and go from there on a nice build. His 340 has never been rebuilt. Mine has and not very well.

I can drive 6 hours and pick it up. 1 hour to load and 6 hours back. Same day trip.

WWTBD?

Go for it. Parts are hard to find and it seems to complete.

I would get pictures with certain features ( today's date, your forum name etc) just to make sure it's in the condition he's describing.

I'd do it. Sounds like you aren't going to lose out unless completely misrepresented.

Just as well. With your hauling skills, you would have lost half the engine on the drive back.

Rebuild the one you have with ported heads, cam, etc...you don't need two boat anchors despite what he claims.

Lose some weight and gain power with a set of aluminum heads while you are spending money.

Nothing wrong with a 440 6-pack, but I have seen 340's that would pull up the pavement.

The small change in HP from 1970 to 1971 was a reduction in compression ratio to prepare for the coming of unleaded gasoline. The large reduction from 1971 to 1972 was solely due to the change in HP rating from gross HP to net HP. The 1972 engines pulled just as hard as the 1971 engines.

Any real 340 is worth its weight in gold. All 273 and 340's were high output engines.
Would have never have waited to get one if its available.
