Default Pet piranha bites off Illinois toddler's fingertip

Pet piranha bites off Illinois toddler's fingertip

Posted: Sat, Jun. 23, 2012, 10:41 AM

CHICAGO - Chicago-area parents thought their pit bull was to blame when they heard their 18-month-old daughter crying and discovered one of her fingertips had been severed.

Turns out, the culprit was a piranha the family kept in an aquarium.

Doctors determined the bite wasn't from a dog after the girl was rushed to a hospital by ambulance Tuesday night.

Cook County Sheriff's Department spokesman Frank Bilecki tells the Chicago Tribune the girl's father cut open one of two piranhas and found the fingertip. He says doctors tried to reattach the fingertip, but he didn't know if they were successful.

He didn't immediately respond to messages left Saturday by The Associated Press, and a hospital spokesman couldn't provide the information.

Bilecki says the parents were distraught and aren't facing charges.

My son had a pacu. His name was Pacu. When we fed him carrots or grapes we could hear him chewing them.

My son worked at a pet store when he was in high school. Someone dropped off the pacu so my son brought him home. He lived with us for several years. He went belly up one day. He is buried in the pasture next to Jogger. He was too large for a sea burial!

That's awesome. I've always wanted a pacu, I love their faces. People often mistake them for red-bellied piranhas, except pacus are legal.

They get about as big as an Oscar.

Piranhas are legal in most places where they wouldn't survive a winter in the wild.

Really? I was only around them once, black piranhas, and it was all hush-hush because they were supposedly illegal. This was in San Diego, maybe they'd survive there, although I would think it would be too cold. I really thought they were all illegal in the US of A. Learn sonthin new every day...

That's so excellent. Sorry for the little girl but the parents are proof positive that you can't fix stupid. Too bad the father didn't dip his dick in the piranha tank for a while so he couldn't breed again.

As we all know artificial intelligence is no match for natural stupidity.

He was about 7 inches long. He would swim to the top of the tank and I would fed him carrots. He also ate some kind of fish food pellets, lettuce, grapes and minnows.

He was too big to flush!

Yep, illegal in San Diego due to their ability to survive in the lakes. Always a good story about somebody catching one at Lake Murray, down the street from where I grew up.

They were readily available in CO when I lived there.
