Default Millions may lose jobless benefits as holidays loom

Nearly half of unemployed in U.S. have been out of work for more than six months

Millions to lose jobless benefits as holidays loom - Politics - More politics - msnbc.com

Extended unemployment benefits for nearly 2 million Americans begin to run out Wednesday, cutting off a steady stream of income and guaranteeing a dismal holiday season for people already struggling with bills they cannot pay.

Unless Congress changes its mind, benefits that had been extended up to 99 weeks will end this month.

Hours before beefed-up benefits were set to expire at midnight on Tuesday, Democrats sought to extend them for another year. But they were blocked by Republican Senator Scott Brown, who said Democrats should have taken time to work out a compromise.

"It's not the way to do business in the United States Senate, and if it is it needs to change," Brown said.

With the unemployment rate stuck at around 9.6 percent, the two parties have been sharply divided over how to cover the cost of weekly checks that help jobless people stay afloat.

There are jobs out there the benefits are to rich, I got a family member on those rolls and the jobs available will not pay as much, no reason in his mind he needs to work. 6 months on my tax $$ is long enough, get a job even if it pays less.

I am self made, do not rely on anyone else for my income, no reason that I have to support others that do not want to take a job for less as after 99 weeks there is a job out there. I support the six months that has been setup, just not longer. I got mine as I have earned it solo and not asking to get more from your pocket book, but if you are in the giving mood you can paypal to me at [email protected] I do take $$ given first, second and from who would like to donate.

I'm taxed enough already. Are you taxed more than you were in 2003 and 2001?

If so, fire your Tax Professional

Yes, let's coddle them with unearned income until either they get a job or what, turn 65?
Yes, that will definitely motivate them.

has become an understatement.

When the checks stop rolling in, only then will people realize their survival instincts and act on them. Those who can't find a job while getting paid seem to miraculously find work when "forced" to. Funny how that works.

And the hysterical part is if/when that happens, you'll credit Obama for "creating" those jobs.

Very well put and after all Obama did create 90,000 private sector jobs last month, has to be that job creating stimilus bill we are paying for

One thing you said is true; survival instincts will sooner or later take affect. Then you'll have no problem with Big Government.

I like it too ... Bush creates 1 million minimum wage jobs via Bush Tax Cuts in his 8 year tenure then loses hundreds of thousands high-paying jobs per month in his last 2 years then drives America into the 2nd Great Depression ...

What's the GOP Plan for jobs and recovery ?
Filibuster every single recovery Bush signed into Law so that it has 0 effect but to add to the deficit and then say it failed ... followed now by a Gingrich shut-down of the govt. until the Tax Cuts for the Rich stimulate the economy and raise the retirement age to 69 because you don't getta no unemployment benefits ....

Nice ...

Proof on minimum wage only jobs? The tax cuts mean millions do not pay taxes and those that earn more get to keep more of there $$ not yours or my right to them. Seems many Americans are against a wage earner keeping what they earn, tax and give to me.

Seems the Obama panel is behind the raising the retirement age to 69, not just Newt, as a country we can not have our cake by just keep extending benefits for those who will not take even a $8 an hour job, that you say are the only ones Bush created, where are the high paying jobs under Obama, they are extended unemployement at my expense.

Wow, I hope you have a reliable source to back that claim up, as nothing I've ever seen comes close to mirroring that.

Last 2 years of Bush would be 2006-2008. I don't see what you're suggesting for that time period.

Sure, an $8 dollar an hour job is a millionaires salary from the Maquidoras to China ... a citizen/slave can afford some galvanized steel for his shanty-hut roof and some new horse shoes for his transportation to and 'fro work ...

I bet you can guess how & where this sounds familiar ...
