A lot of times that $800 voucher offer doesn't apply to discount fare fliers. It's a four hour drive those united employees should have been in an Uber XL.

There's a whole lot of just because you can doesn't mean you should going on with both sides of this story. The dude was acting like a petulant child and was treated like one. But at the same time it's clear the airline industry has long forgotten that they're a service industry.

UAL stocks lost 750million in cap already, literally a billion dollar **** up.

He was flying out of Chicago. A $800 voucher and a free hotel room. If you're going to be booted off a domestic flight, O'Hair (or Midway) is about the best possible place to be. Take that voucher and find a ticket to your destination, or close, and perhaps you have to get a rental car. Sure, it sucks. You might even need to use that hotel room. But 20 minutes on your smart phone will get you all taken care of and you'll be at your destination by mid-morning the following day at the very latest.

Once you fly enough stuff like getting booted off a flight is no big deal. I've seen people thrilled to get a nice fat voucher for giving up their seat. They go down to American or Southwest and book a cheap one-way flight and get there about just as fast with an extra $400 or so in their pocket.

Last year I was going from St Louis to Jacksonville FL via Memphis on Southwest. At St Louis they announced they were oversold for the flight to Memphis and if anyone on the flight had a final destination other than Memphis and was willing to change plans they would give you a voucher and put you on the next available flight.
I went up to the gate agent and she told me they could route me through Atlanta on a flight that got into Jax less than a half hour later than my original flight. I said OK and was expecting a $200 or so voucher. Turned out they gave me a voucher for almost $700!
The real kicker was when I got to Jax I saw the flight from Memphis to Jax was delayed and had not arrived yet.

At $800 and a free hotel room I would have been all over that

It's really not an issue of what he "deserved" because contractually, United had every right to do what they did. When you buy a ticket, you agree to the terms of the contract (which almost no one reads). ALL airlines overbook (a practice that should stop) and have done so for years. However, United is not obligated to allow you to fly because you hold a ticket. You can be removed from the plane at any point while at the gate and they are only legally obligated to refund your purchase price. The fact that they were willing to compensate people by offering them $800 cash and a paid hotel stay just shows what an idiot this guy was. The mistake United made was pulling people off the plane after they were seated. They are still within their rights, but it wasn't the most delicate way to go about it. The minute the guy refused to comply with instructions of the flight crew, he was in the wrong.

And I have to disagree about him being a victim. Victims are not offered financial compensation for their inconvenience.

I'm sure he'll sue, and there will be a major brouhaha about it. The media will have a field day with this one. I really hope United fights it however. This nonsense about allowing the court of public opinion to rule the world has to stop.
The airlines have their rights and if LEOs of any descriptor are involved, the only thing you can do after complying to their demands/commands is get a good lawyer and take it to court.

By being denied a flight it could be quite detrimental to your plans. Assuming that guy was a real doctor with real patients it could inconvenience a shit load of people.

We (me and wife) were asked to give up our seats for serious cash a few years ago and it would have been bad for us. We were scheduled to board a cruise ship for a 2 week cruise and going the next day that ship would have been long gone .

We nicely told the air people that and best guess Princess lines who books a hell of a lot of flights would not be happy. (weather problems a totally different situation.) We flew out on time We were also early to get our boarding passes. No one wanted to give up and they started looking to boot, but our earlier arrival helped a bit also I think. They finely did get the seats they wanted and the flight left only a few minuets late.

Dumbass.

One word will fit the "Doctor" if he really is one. If he is a doctor, I question his decision making. Now imagine going into a business such as Lowe's, Chili's or a even a doctors office and forcing them to serve you. Yea, I'm sure that'll work there too.

Dumbass.

Oh, and all those folks upset on social media, fukk you, ya whining bastiges. Ya gotta find something to be upset about. This will soon be forgotten and you'll be upset about something else next week. Douchebags.

All true, except if I've already paid for the shit, I expect them to deliver.

He is in fact a doctor, albeit a shady one and not playing with a full deck. If he was smart, when they told him he had to get off the plane he would have played the race card and immediately accused them of singling him out because he is Chinese. Not right, but may have been more effective.

The airlines, imo, is a little different when you've paid upfront. Plenty of folks know shit can happen...weather, a broken aircraft, and in this case, United wanted to bump pax. Most everyone knows this can happen. Acting a fool is a quick way for the agent to call for help. Was United right or wrong? There's plenty of folks arm chair QB'ing this right now. I say United, whether or not they're a shitty company, was in the right to bump pax at their discretion.

I've worked passenger service and know the demands of customers. Although, my work was with military and dependents, I still saw folks that weren't connecting the dots correctly on any given day. Sometimes shit happens beyond the control of anyone involved. Life ain't fair...sometimes one is the dog and sometimes one is the fire hydrant.

Edit:

I did a small bit of reading on this incident. Supposedly, United bumped folks to make room for employees. The employees were needed to crew aircraft. So, United could bump pax or cancel other flights.

Their stock lost quite a lot of market share today.
They were wrong.
Anyone who says otherwise could GAFF about customer service.
I don't care if this guy was a homeless bum. They stepped wayyy over the line on this one and the company will pay dearly via lawsuit and lost business.
United is scum. They were wrong.

This was United's real mistake.

I will say that if I had a sordid background like that mofo, I'd have gotten off the plane.

Seems like by not complying with being ordered to get off the plane & the cops having to drag him off, he's opened himself up to legal charges.

Sure, passengers get bumped everyday, but how many of them have already boarded the plane? I don't disagree that United has the legal right to bump passengers, but doing it after they have boarded? That is an extremely bad move, especially to accommodate crew members who had to be in Louisville the next day.

But, hey, what do I know about airline shit. What I do know is their stock ended the day 1% lower today than yesterday because of this one event. They would have been money ahead to buy those four employees their own G550 to get to Louisville.
