Which part?

We were all posting in a group on Facebook while this was down.

Someone was attacking this place so no one could get on. the computer experts can explain it. I tried using computers for dummies since that's what I tried to learn.

We experienced what's known as a "Distributed Denial of Service" attack, specifically, a syn flood variation.

In simple words, some malicious program was employed to flood our server (specifically, this site's IP) with an extreme amount of bs TCP requests to the extent it was no longer able to keep up and serve regular traffic.

In this instance, the attack was so large, the server/host decided to pull this site completely offline until the attack subsided so as to not degrade their entire network and affect their other customers. Gary, Mike and myself had no access either. We were just as "banned" as everyone else.

It is unknown, and likely never will be, as to whodunit or why this happened to us specifically, nor even if it's completely ended yet. Attacks like this travel through many proxy connections all over the world, we had several hundred simultaneous incoming hits from everywhere...Turkey, Brazil, Thailand, etc.

While these sorts of malicious attacks are typically aimed at shutting down high-profile websites, IMO it was not a attack on this site by anyone we know.

I know GB is taking a long nap right about now in relief that we're back up and running, but until I hear from him, I still do not know HOW clean our bill of health is right now. If someone specifically did aim this at us, my fear is it could just as easily happen again.

For those wondering a "syn flood" = http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SYN_flood
Quote:
A SYN flood is a form of denial-of-service attack in which an attacker sends a succession of SYN requests to a target's system in an attempt to consume enough server resources to make the system unresponsive to legitimate traffic.

Normally when a client attempts to start a TCP connection to a server, the client and server exchange a series of messages which normally runs like this:

The client requests a connection by sending a SYN (synchronize) message to the server.
The server acknowledges this request by sending SYN-ACK back to the client.
The client responds with an ACK, and the connection is established.

This is called the TCP three-way handshake, and is the foundation for every connection established using the TCP protocol.

A SYN flood attack works by not responding to the server with the expected ACK code. The malicious client can either simply not send the expected ACK, or by spoofing the source IP address in the SYN, causing the server to send the SYN-ACK to a falsified IP address - which will not send an ACK because it "knows" that it never sent a SYN.

The server will wait for the acknowledgement for some time, as simple network congestion could also be the cause of the missing ACK, but in an attack increasingly large numbers of half-open connections will bind resources on the server until no new connections can be made, resulting in a denial of service to legitimate traffic. Some systems may also malfunction badly or even crash if other operating system functions are starved of resources in this way.
Like a scrotum, that's it in a nutshell.

Anyone notice that some of your PM's are gone? I just finished saving the ones I wanted and deleted the rest, and now all the old ones are back again.
