Its a cycle, entities build up layers of supervision as they grow and then some new CEO rolls in, wants to "make a mark" and takes out a layer of management - then they find out the people left can only handle so many "direct" reports and project scope and so they add back a layer of mid-management. Its worse though when they hit the poor line workers; they usually are just making it in the first place.

And the cycle continues.

My son works for Amazon, they have had several rounds of layoff in the last 1.5 years. So far, he has survived.

My daughter works for McKinsey. AFAIK, they have not had rounds of layoffs yet, but at the annual review, many people received a rating of "CTL", which stands for "Counseled to Leave". Obviously they are interested in reducing staff.

As I've said before: yes, tons of jobs in my field are unfilled, and they all seem to have the same reason = hiring managers that want champagne on a beer budget. Until that changes, I expect there to be tons of unfilled jobs for the foreseeable future.

I've been with the same company for over 19 years. There have been about 10 layoff waves in that time and I got spared every time. At this point in my career, I'm actually hoping to get laid off as my severance package is significant, enough to pay off all my debt and be able to live off my rental income. However, I doubt this will happen any time soon.
