Default For you C4 guys

That think a C5 is too hard to work on compared to a C4. I had the dreaded Check Engine Light come on today. Without help from any diagnostic equipment or dealer techs, I fixed it myself. I put that gas cap back on all by myself.

Seems you can't drive the thing with the gas cap off, go figure.

Ah yes, the gas cap, they can be finicky sometimes. You just can't stick a rag in them when you loose the cap anymore.

At least you figured out the gas cap was the problem..Most C5 owners would have just called AAA to come tow the car to the nearest dealership. Then the dealership would have charged them $300.00 to run diagnostics until they figured out it was the gas cap..then they would not want to take a chance on the old gas cap and would install a new one at $60.00 plus $55.00 Labor. So, according to my calculations you save yourself $415.00........NICE.....WW

Would this apply to a C4 also (check engine light comes on)?

Nope...only the OBD2 cars have a self-check for evap function (tank sealed tight to hold in vapors). everytime you run the car, it pressurizes the tank to 1 psi and checks for a pressure drop/leak. Evap emissions are important, but early obd2 cars always choked on that test when the cap was not on. new cars don't set a permanent light for that if the user screws on the cap the next time the car runs. the newest cars don't even have caps anymore-self sealing nozzle inlet.

only a 96 is obd2-that C4 might have it.

At least the diagnostic procedure for a C5 doesn't list a paperclip as a required tool.

Never understood why people use a paperclip. the reader is only 25 bucks and much simpler to use.

Because a paperclip is about $25 less and is just as easy to use.
