I'm limiting myself to two cans also. They're 55 gallon drums but that's only two.

I had to fly to DC to receive said asset in person. It couldn't even be shipped. And in true DWiz form, I paid for a first class ticket, and logged the expense for a coach ticket. Clearly they wouldn't approve 1st class.

I landed in DC, met my co-worker about 2-3 hours later, and then had to wait about 5 more hours to fly home. Cloak and dagger mang!

For the interview, did you wear a dress, to honor J. Edgar Hoover?

Na. My primary machine has already been wiped. All of the data that I exported and imported is gone. Like I was never there.

Security on these machines is extremely impressive. The highest security box cannot reach .net at all.

No, just a GWiz approved safe. But yes, denying access to others is huge.

When they did his extensive background check, they talked to every single teacher he had (that was still alive) starting with third grade, thru high school and college.

Also in true form, the OTHER (first) .guv project that I was on (and am still on in parallel), their IT department screwed up not only once, but twice, and yet they were given direct orders on how to write an OData connector.

I gave them a paint by numbers picture of how to write an OData connector to make SQL Server accessible to Salesforce through Salesforce Connect as an external object. My original POC didn't implement authentication, but it's pretty basic shit.

Fast forward, those clowns did it wrong the first time by using a token system, and then when we finally called them to the carpet, they implemented Basic Authentication, but did it their own way and broke Microsoft's rules. Needless to say, it didn't work with Salesforce.

Fast forward to yesterday, our team is looking like a bunch of smucks, and .guv spent $37k for Salesforce connect, and it was looking like a complete bust, which would have made my team look like morons. Without being able to prove them to be at fault, this could have been a major hit to my career, and the contracting consulting firm's reputation. I had to go into beast mode to make this work and prove them wrong.

Now...I've NEVER done this before in my life. I spent 3 hours yesterday floundering and got no further on my goal to introduce Basic Auth on my POC. There is just no content on .Net along these lines.

BUT, today, I stumbled on what I needed to know, and I effing made it work to Microsoft's specs. Project is now golden, we will deliver on our promise, I learned a new skill, and I get to finish my paint by numbers documentation for .guv so they can implement this. They spent 2.5 months effing with this, and delivered 2 bad solutions. When I took back over control, I took me a total of 4 hours to find the 100% working solution.

(in my best Foghorn Leghorn voice)

I say, I say boy.....you're doing it all wrong!

the point of a lucrative .gov contract is not to deliver it on time and under budget, no sir!

the point of a lucrative .gov contract is to make it more lucrative via delays, change orders, expansions of scope, and moving of goal posts. everyone of those "justified" revisions is worth LOTS of money. increased billable hours, increased billable rates, costs to redo work already done once, costs to hire outside help (relatives and self dealing are very useful here) at inflated "market" rates......

Son, you really need to get with the program and stop trying to make .gov happy with a working product. Uncle Sugar is in the business of spending money, lots of money, and you need to help him spend money in YOUR direction.

Only difference being I'm a hired gun for a contractor that has the relationships with .guv. My firm whored me out to be a part of this project because it could provide cash flow to my company.

I was brought into the integration realm outside of my hired tasks (data migration). I built a POC and made recommendations, they spent nearly $40k, and it fell on its face. Their IT department effed it up. And they could have pinned it on me if I didn't do what I did today to prove them to be incompetent dorks. I'm 100% vindicated, and the consulting firm that I'm contracted out to is also vindicated. Today was huge.

Oh yeah, said consulting firm was just bought out by Salesforce because of their .guv exposure.

i don't doubt your expertise and dedication.

make sure everyone knows who saved the bacon - YOU!

and the next project that involves your company or you, rates are going up!

proven performance baby!

unrelated story:

many years ago, worked for a very small consulting company, I was the only Professional Engineer on staff. one day a client calls us up, they have a hot water problem in a hotel they own, clients not happy.

they send me a 20 or so page report from a local mechanical firm, and they concluded that they had to replace all the water piping, to the tune of about $750k or so.

i asked a few questions, finally got answers from the folks at the property, diagnosed the real problem (just one line), had them replace that only for about $28k, problem solved, everyone had hot water again.

i got paid for 8 hours of work.
