Someone will cut out the VIN stampings and weld them into a Dynacorn body.

What? they make repro bodies ?? can't imagine much market for them, vs the cost of production......

Yeah, they make Mustangs too. Around $16k for the body IIRC.

Yep, Reggie Jackson, had a super rare Camaro that sold at the BJ auction years ago.

NOTHING on the car was factory original except for the VIN tag. The new owner didn't realize it and was pissed later on to find out it was built from a catalog of repro parts. I think he tried to sue BJ and Reggie.

@The_Dude. Remember that shop in Tx buying wrecks and moving VINs about 10 yrs ago? Shut down, major fines of fraud as built kit cars to resemble Eleanor with Dynacom parts w welded on Vins. Title fraud comes to mind

Vin swapping is as old as cars... I've seem cars only the firewall was original so it was an "original car".
I almost got burned years ago by someone swapping vin numbers, car was a baseline and he added a few rs/ss items and a vin. Wasn't obvious unless you knew what to look for different.

I now have even more doubts about that trim tag looking at the pics. Something on top of the fastner heads...seems sketchy.

I learned with midyear Corvettes and other muscle cars to look at the details. Some used a rose type rivet head from the factory, etc...If you saw one with metal screws holding it in place you knew it had been replaced for some reason...$$$ to make the car appear as rare from the factory.

Rebodying is a terrible temptation. I'm sure there are tons of Shelbys, Boss cars, and Cobrajets with the only original body part being the VIN stamping on the fender apron. It's really incredibly easy to do with a Mustang.

Not worth saving on any level. Seller is full of more shit than a Christmas turkey. He might be able to get some money for the cowl tag, but the Vin tag is obviously wasted.

My friend Steve could be considered an expert ( my choice of words) on the early mustangs and cougars. Certain options had specific types of fasteners / brackets / bolts and as you alluded to, you really have to know what your looking at.

At least the GM vehicles had more documentation with tags but anything can be faked or altered when greed is involved.

About twenty years ago a friend bought a '69 Z/28. I went over to look at it. Walked around it once, looked inside, and asked if he knew it wasn't a Z/28. He asked what made me think that. I explained the single leaf rear springs, no sway bar, no power brakes...and an auto. He said the guy told him he installed the auto. I then asked where the clutch pedal, Z bar, etc went. He was very disappointed.

A customer came in three or four years ago with a '74 Z/28. I went out to look at it and we got to talking. She told me she suspected it wasn't actually a Z. I looked at it and concurred. No gauges, single leaf rear, and no Z/28 stamp on the tag. She said she really didn't care and loved the car because of how it looked and sounded. I told her that was all that mattered. Beautiful car.
