Only reason I agreed to take her there.. First thing was a trip to Mount Vernon to Johnny's Pizzeria.. 80 years in the same place.. Best Pizza in the world for me.. I eat there every time I'm up that way.
Lucia of Soho is also very good as is Angelo's Coal Fired Pizza near Central Park. All of those places have top notch Pizza!

So you didn't get the full NYC experience?

Stepping on a used syringe?
Stepping in human waste?
Getting pushed onto the subway tracks?
Mugged?

Tourist areas are kept clean. We also did not stay in the city after dark. Lots of cops in touristic areas.

You are very courageous.

I was in NYC a few years back and loved it. It would take lottery money to get me to go back.

Just like everything, the media exaggerates things that are happening. Sure, bad things certainly happen in NYC. No doubt about it. However, there is significant police presence in touristic areas and it is 100% safe during daytime as long as you don't stray from the common tourist locations. Yes, there are "weird" people everywhere but I did not see anything that scared me in any way. I would certainly not be willing to do the same at night or go to areas that are not touristic. WTC.. Full of cops.. Time Square.. Full of cops.. Central Park... Full of cops.. Penn Station... Full of Cops. Again, you need to know where you can and can't go.

The closest I'll get to that shithole is crossing the GWB & the Cross Bronx as quickly as possible.

Anywhere that's "full of cops" and not safe to go at night is off my list of places to visit. YMMV.

Did you drive the Plaid?

I would not drive any vehicle into NYC..
Flew up on Saturday early morning and back on Monday evening..
Flight was dirt cheap.. $84 round trip each.. $168 total for me an my daughter for the flight.
Used public transportation. The only thing that makes sense in NYC.

I've never had an issue with individuals who I've met while there. To each his own. The more people who live there, the less live near me.

I don't bother with the pizza, since it's the best place, by far, to get a Rueben.

I love thin crust Pizza and NYC is the best place for that.
