Default Question About Ammo

My neighbor brought home 500, 147 gr, solid copper wad cutter projectiles.
I bought them for $30.00, (0.06¢ ea.).
I know that they are used for paper target practice.
I'll load them into .38 & .357 brass,and use them to practice.
Does anyone use these? Is the sole purpose of these for target practice?

Wad cutter and semi wad cutter bullets are used for target (paper ) shooting. They cut nice holes in the paper

Could you use them for self defense? Absolutely but I (personally ) only use factory ammo for self defense purposes.

That is the only thing I have ever heard of people using wad cutters for but I am hardly an expert

Not a defense round, but leaves a perfectly round punched hole in paper. When you are scoring competition targets, you want the hole to be as crisp as possible to show if it was "in or out" of the scoring ring.

Those things are fun- they cut paper like a hole punch. I've loaded them both ways: Flush and sticking out one groove. those are plated, so no wax lube rings, but anyhow, they usually use somewhat lighter charges with diminished case volume. I loaded one batch so light that I had to readjust sights as the projectiles were hitting low at 15 and 25 yds.

Back when revolvers were most common, many would suggest to load those as an effective defensive round since they have a tendency to expand more than a round nose bullet.

Never used Ranier but I thought they were copper plated onto lead, not solid copper? In any case wad cutters make a nice big entrance hole in whatever you shoot them with. I like em a lot out of revolvers. SJWC is the only bullet I've ever needed in 357 even though they aren't a true wad cutter, more of a truncated cone. False label IMO.

True wad cutters are great for close up work, though maybe not so much at long range due to the lack of aerodynamics? Never bothered to check. Before wadcutters could be bought people would load bullets backward in the case to create their own wad cutters (I used to clip the round noses off with wire cutters and pack two of these lead cylinders into a case for a duplex load). These are called dum-dums and intended for self-defense. No high speed cameras and ballistic gellatin back then but it was easy to see they cut a big entrance hole and the theory was they'd tumble inside the body making them useful at destroying things that needed it. They certainly worked that way on hard targets like ovens, refridgerators, and autos.

A flat nose bullet like that takes a heavy beating on impact and it appears to limit penetration but as with most results that's also dependant on many other variables. Probably not going to limit penetration more than a hollowpoint for instance.
