It's been a few years, but one summer we hosted this young black girl for two weeks for summer vacation through a program called the Fresh Air Fund. It's a thing where you host kids from low-income NYC families who would never otherwise have an opportunity to have a real summer vacay outside the city. Her name was Brittany, I think she was 9 or 10. Lived a few blocks from the old Yankee Stadium. Pretty bad hood. Lived in a high rise and wasn't allowed to go out after dark. We took her camping in the Shenandoah mountains, swimming, hiking, stuff like that. She didn't know how to ride a bike, was terrified of water, never seen a deer. It was pretty neat to see her experience new things for the first time. I would recommend the program to anyone who wants to help a kid experience life outside the Big Apple, who wouldn't otherwise have that opportunity.

Situational awareness. Very important. I tell my daughter the same thing when she's tooling around Los Angeles. Especially when she takes the train downtown and such.

One thing I picked up for her was a messenger bag. Anything she's carrying, she puts in the bag. Then she wears the bag diagonal across her body and keeps the bag in front. It can't be snatched off her shoulder and, having it in front, she can always see it and have access to it. Food for thought.
