Default Anyone else call them Gin Mills ?

Was walking on the boardwalk and this thought came into mind....I remember my Grandfather,Uncle and my Dad going to the local "Gin Mill" in West New York....I would go with them and I would get the Red Pistachios for 1 penny and come home with red fingers and lips

I just remember spending much of my summers at my granparents' place in Far Rockaway, Long island (properly pronounced "Lawn Gieland") and having Taki cups on the boardwalk

That term was popular when I was young, don't really hear it anymore.

Plus, it's kinda open-ended: "Let's go to the gin mill."

Which gin mill?

Remember "General Mills" on the cereal box when you were a kid?

I think he was a WWII general. Or maybe during the Crusades.

It's a Prohibition Era term. Gin can be made with cheap grain alcohol and flavoring- no aging required. So it was a popular drink back in the day at "gin mills".

It's pretty neat how some phrases just hang around and spark memories, huh?

Don't you ever get tired of being wrong?

Quote:
Like many of Britain’s national favourites, gin did not originate on our shores. In fact, if you don’t count the Italian monks who are thought to have used juniper berries as flavourings in distilled spirits back in the 11th century, it’s Holland that’s credited as the birthplace of gin.

That's not gin as we know it. If you want to be a true asshole about it, I can go back to the first century:

Quote:
“[Gin’s] core ingredient, juniper, has been combined with alcohol as far back as… 70 A.D.,” Simon Ford, co-founder of The 86 Co. (Fords Gin, Caña Brava Rum), says. At that time, a physician named Pedanius Dioscorides published a five-volume encyclopedia about herbal medicine. “Within his papers is a detailed description of the use of juniper berries steeped in wine to combat chest ailments,” Ford says. “In 1055, the Benedictine Monks of Solerno, Italy included a recipe for tonic wine infused with juniper berries in their ‘Compendium Solernita.’”
