Uniforms as Fashion: Tribute or Disrespect?

I confess: I still watch American Idol. And although I may publicly declare that I watch it solely because I value musical talent, I have to admit that I secretly like checking out the fashion statements made by both the contestants and the judges. You never know what crazy outfits will show up on that stage!

Well, last week, one contestant in particular made a fashion statement during his performance that caught the attention of the military community. Elijah Liu, who was voted off the show the following night, wore a Marine Corps jacket with Lance Corporal chevrons on the sleeves.

Liu’s outfit choice was the topic of conversation on this Marine Corps Recruit Depot – Parris Island Facebook page, where nearly 250 comments were left, mostly from people expressing their outrage over the Idol contestant’s disrespect for the uniform. There was also chatter on the American Idol discussion board, as well as on our own SpouseBuzz Facebook page, in which commenters make it quite clear that wearing a military uniform when not in the military is unacceptable.

I've had some mixed feelings about this over the years, I think it's a sign of disrespect myself. Use to see John Lennon (don't mean the Sgt Pepper frilly foo-foo stuff) and others bastardize various military uniforms for their fashion or political statements, I don't think he knew a rifle butt from a bayonet and couldn't distinguish between what an airman, soldier, sailor, or Marine looked like. JMO.

I'd say if you didn't earn the uniform, and didn't put in the work, you shouldn't wear it, period.

As a veteran I strongly agree with the above. I am reminded that this is a free country but I consider it a major breech of protocal and etiquette to disrespect the uniform of any branch of service in public. The majority you see doing this are not fit to wear the uniform, mentally or physically, and probably wouldn,t make a pimple on a service members ass. That is all!!!!! Rant Rant Rant

I don't like people doing it, and I would certainly not wear one, but unless you are doing it for fraudulent purposes or financial gain, etc, it's freedom of speech.

Meh, I still have my Army BDU jacket and will wear it when I feel like it. The rank fell off years ago but my name and unit patch are still on it. I think the last time I had it on was at a veteran day parade ten years ago. They have different uniforms now anyway so I doubt anyone would give a shit.

I've served in the Air Force for over 16 years, worked hard to get where I'm at, deployed twice to the Middle East, been shot at/bombed on more than one occasion.

It's simple. If you didn't earn the uniform...don't wear it

I spent many years in Uncle Sam's Air Force and am now retired. I've busted my ass in some places, that at the time, I thought God had forsaken. Now, some little silly ass entertainer is going to wear a uniform others have earned to wear. Fcuk him. I hope he trips and gets a microphone stuck in his ass. Although with many entertainers that might be enjoyable.
