Also surprising that they don't have something like an EPIRB (Emergency position-indicating radiobeacon) or such that would automatically release in the event of a loss of power or similar issue. A little different with a sub at that depth compared to a surface ship sinking, but think it would be a good thing (or even required).

They are in international waters. Nothing is required.

That's even more concerning that for a submersible to go to that depth, I would think there would need to be some standards applied. All the ships I'm working on are either build to Mil Standards, or classed for ABS and there are requirements for each.

This tourist vessel was reportedly designed so that it automatically rises to the surface if it malfunctions and would have a releasable beacon or signal buoy that floats to the surface.

Obviously they didn't test it very well, or the beacon would have been found by now...

When you put this on a 'Risk vs Reward' scale,

1/4 $mil plus a fair chance of dying, just for a selfie with Titanic in the background, it sounds absurd .

Depths of the manufactures are either max depth, crush depth. Two different numbers. But I agree, its not much for error, as they have found out..

News reporting that even if the sub makes it to the surface, the hatch is bolted shut.....from the OUTSIDE, meaning, they could be bobbing on the surface, and unless they are found in time, would still asphyxiate because they're literally sealed inside.

They've got about 1 day's worth of air left, assuming they're not dead already.

Canadian aircraft detected underwater noises in the search area for the missing Titan submersible, the US Coast Guard said early on Wednesday, amid US media reports that regular banging sounds had been picked up.

Explain this?? Does the plane drop some sort of device in the ocean that allows them to hear underwater?

Not if the Canadians are right. Hearing banging at regular 30 minute intervals? That sounds like people who are not only alive, but thinking logically and have a plan. The question is, can they be found in time?

Frankly, as much as it is about saving those people, there's a larger picture.....a successful rescue would be a desperately needed morale boost for America, Canada, our military folks.....it would be a throwback to a time when America (and Canada) could get shit done.

Remember baby Jessica down the well in Texas? The Chilean miners? The world was on the edge of its seat as those rescue attempts were underway.
