Thing is, troops will still be unarmed when off base. The National Guard in Tn has said that it will start letting some members carry issued weapons on base. While I think this is in the right direction, it's not enough. Military members are soft targets everywhere else. I agree with RedLS1 when he said not every military member needs to carry. A 21 year old with half a brain scares me too.

I also realize the LtCdr broke the rules, but I will stand by my past comments. The military has some asinine rules that have been shoved down their throats by politicians. That said, I'm sure the decision to disarm everyone (except military police) on a federal installation came from the feds, not military commanders who completely have their hands tied. That's why the rules need to be changed by the .gov. I personally don't like being stripped of my rights when in uniform, but it is what it is I suppose. Maybe the politicians will do the right thing and let a few more of us carry our personal side arms for our own protection and the protection of others. I am a little doubtful that anything like that will happen though... Just my .02 for what little it's worth.

I'm doubtful it would ever happen as well... simply for the complicated aspect that if you are in uniform, you are undoubtedly seen as a direct representative of the military.

Let's say somebody does screw up and kills an innocent person while authorized to carry by the military. Eventually it will happen. All of a sudden becomes that our own military killed an American, in America. That's a big can of worms to open.

You also don't want a few hundred thousand armed soldiers walking around in this country essentially acting as a non-regulated vigilante terrorist task force, which is in reality what some seem to be suggesting. I hope I don't need to list all of the issues that would cause.

I'm certainly not for disarming our soldiers and I'm certainly not for leaving soft targets as we are doing currently, but I don't really have a good answer that's realistic.

Unfortunately it is a double edged sword any way you look at it. There are some people I work with that I'm like, yes, they should definitely be allowed to carry, and then others I think shouldn't be allowed to carry a plastic knife. It would be a daunting task to figure out who should carry, and who shouldn't. No real easy answer.

It's not the Navy's job to give press conferences and appease the masses.
