It'll split. I helped my cousin last weekend split some oak that big on a splitter about that size.

Coat the ends with Anchorseal.

red oak is an open grain wood, it has holes that go all the way thru it. that would allow juices to absorb into it and stay there. that's why it is NOT used for curing booze. white oak is used for that, as it is a closed grain wood.

other closed grain woods, hardwoods, include walnut, maple, and cherry. all good choices for a cutting board. you could also use white oak for a cutting board, or parts of one, as i have done before.

Tom's splitter

Splitter is powered by a 2hp electric motor with a 2 stage pump and a 27" stroke cylinder.
Easy to start in cold weather, just plug in to 220V and turn on.
