Hal Blaine, never heard of him until I read a book on the Wrecking Crew, a great read.

"He is widely regarded as one of the most prolific drummers in rock and roll history, having "certainly played on more hit records than any drummer in the rock era"

No shortage of exceptional drummers out there.

I think it's a mistake to get into the who's best challenge.

Many drummers are of differing genres and have very unique technique and style that is virtually impossible for another to copy.

A lot of unsung heroes. One of my favorites is Manu Katche.
Scott

Insane control of the pedals at the 2:00 mark

Music starts at the :45 mark
Manu is outstanding with all the small fills that shape the song differently than any of Gabriel's previous drummers.

Same reason I'm a huge Copeland fan. Guy is an absolute talent and nobody sounds even close.

Great book! There's also a good documentary about the Wrecking Crew. It was directed by Tommy Tedesco's son and centers a good deal on him but spends plenty of time on the other big names that were a part of the Wrecking Crew. Tedesco, for those who don't know was probably the premier guitarist in the Wrecking Crew.

Again, great book and documentary for anyone interested in popular music of the 60s.

Makes me want to watch it again! It is an outstanding documentary.

AXS is airing a documentary about George Martin that looks promising as well. Have it on the DVR but haven't watched it yet.

I have a Hal Blaine early vinyl album, if I only knew how to transfer from the phono to a thumb drive.

I've 'ripped' a number of my LPs but it's a little tedious unless you have one of the new USB turntables. Looks like Amazon has a fair amount of his stuff that you can get on MP3.

And there are some streaming sites that have impressive libraries of the oldies that have been ripped to high quality FLAC files.

Tidal offers half price military discounts as well.
I just don't care for the owner.

So here's what I did...

Set up my receiver to "record out" and ran a cable from my receiver line level out to a "Line In" on my PC. Downloaded Audacity, a free audio recording and editing software an used it to record an entire LP side. Then edited the result into separate songs. As I recall, Audacity can output MP3 so I exported each song separately. It's not hard but just takes time and effort. Especially cutting the recording into separate song, naming them etc. It's easier if you just do album sides as a single MP3(FLAC, or other format) but I like having the individual songs.

Buddy Rich produced an album for his daughter and he hired Hal Blaine as drummer. He was asked, why didn't he do the drumming? He replied he wanted the best.

link: The sessions an interview with Hal Blaine on youtube. Blaine mentioned that both he and Rich were Jewish.
