Default Birds in Flight

Caught this guy on the other side of a lake. Had to use a 2x converter with my 500mm lens to get him. Had to use manual focus too. Hard getting it at that distance.

Love the eagle shots, especially the one of it taking off leaving the tree limb, coming straight at ya!

He took off way past the other end of the lake and so far I couldn't see him anymore.

I was clickclickclickclickclickclick trying to get the shots without changing my focus or settings. I had to go with manual focus and couldn't adjust on the fly.

It is amazing you were able to track focus at that distance doing it manually! Nice work.

They look so majestic in flight! And regal even just sitting!

Fine choice of symbol for our country!

No idea. The left one was definitely bigger of the 2. Do both males and females look the same?

They're ignoring each other. They must be married.

Nice shots, good an sharp EXIF data not showing, what lens and setting were you shooting? Looks like maybe a 300 2.8?

Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM Pretty sure they've been through a couple upgrades on this lens. This is the first generation.

I'd have to look back at the original images, but I'm sure it was iso 800 at the 400 end. These birds were a long way out.

Wow, those are some of the sharpest images I have seen from that lens! Right now I have no need for a super tele as I don't shoot wildlife, though started looking recently as my daughter gets into sports next year. That being said I all but ruled out the 100-400 because I had yet to see some really crisp shots on other photo forums. Those are great though....I need to revisit this lens again. Thanks.

I had the 70-200 2.8L. It's noticibly sharper than this one, but it doesn't have the reach. 400 is a minimum for wildlife IMHO. Especially birds which fly away at the slightest motion.

I've had some focus issues with this lens I NEVER have with my 28-70 2.8. That lens is tack sharp. I'll add this; the 100-400 does focus very quickly. I friend of mine has a Tamron that's a POS as far as focus. It always seems to be hunting, and hunting S L O W.
