It offers huge opportunity for advancement however it could easily lead to the rapid demise of life on the planet.

Short version - It will allow the creation of far more believable lies. For me, that means an exponentially higher level of mistrust in all things. You know when all is said and done, it will be the Bible that will be the only unchangeable truth.

People these day really struggle with the concept of accountability, AI is going to the scapegoat to carry out the feelings people can't say out loud. I actually just attended a webinar about removing human bias in AI. Basically, all of the data that accurately reflects humans is too icky and they feel like we should whitewash what we teach AI so that it doesn't do the whole bias thing better than humans can.

This is actually one of the reasons site security is moving away from that whole security questions garbage (street you grew up on, favorite teacher, mother's maiden name, etc)

"Artificial Intelligence" has been around since the advent of computers. Many saw computers as an avenue to reduce labor and thus tasked computers and the hosted software to collect specific data that could be transferred to a spreadsheet and analyzed. Others tasked computers to run billions of possible outcomes and predict the best outcome against a set of rules provided by the programmer.

Nothing basic has changed.

Smart folks figured out that the video processing guys (Nvidia, AMD, Intel) were making GPU's that were beasts unburdened by the CPU BS tasks.

The sheeple will believe anything out in front of them, that's the danger as I see it. Certain social demographic groups I see casuing issues when deep fakes are produced.

There is no AI - just the latest money-snatching hype to get investors and consumers involved. Its hype just like crypto and EVs so the smart money can shear the rubes.

No software yet has intuition, emotions, sentience - they are just "expert systems" and I wrote a few myself back in the 80s...

There are so many things that can go wrong with it. The US (and a handful of European countries) want to implement some laws governing it's use which should absolutely be a thing. I worry about adversarial countries using it for military applications which you can bet your ass they're already doing. Never mind the media portion of it (deep fakes, etc.) as those have been around for over 15 years. AI just makes them better and harder to spot. But when you put unregulated/biased AI in the hands of adversaries (China, Democrats, etc.) it becomes very dangerous, very quickly. (In fact, it already has...why do you think Congress is trying to regulate/govern it's use globally?)

AI is incredibly biased already. I have toyed with ChatGTP and have come to the conclusion that it was programmed by the prostitute who started up Snopes and others from the alphabet community. The inherent biases are almost comically easy to uncover. Ask ChatGTP if a man can have a period for instance. You'll love the response.
