Default $70,000 Smore: Marshmallows, Chocolate, Graham Crackers, and Tesla…Check!

Third Tesla in 5 weeks shockingly flares up.
Third fire in Tesla Model S reported | Fox News
Quote:
Another Tesla Model S electric car has caught fire, this time after hitting road debris outside of Smyrna, Tennessee.

The blaze on Wednesday afternoon engulfed the front of the car. A spokeswoman for the Tennessee Highway Patrol says the Model S was headed east on Interstate 24 when it ran over a tow hitch. The hitch hit the undercarriage of the car, causing an electrical fire.

It's the third fire in a Model S in the past five weeks and similar to one in early October just outside of Seattle. In that fire, a driver hit road debris that pierced a shield and the battery pack, causing a fire. The other blaze happened in Mexico after the driver ran over a roundabout and crashed into a concrete wall and a tree at a high speed.
The Model S, which starts at $70,000, can go up to 265 miles on a single charge.

In the Tennessee case, the driver was able to pull onto an emergency lane. No one was hurt.

Tesla says the fire was not spontaneous. Spokeswoman Liz Jarvis Shean says Tesla has sent a team to Tennessee to investigate the fire. She says the company has been in contact with the driver, who believes the car saved his life.

The fire burned the front of the car, according to pictures posted on the Jalopnik.com and Valuewalk.com websites.

Shares of the carmaker, based in Palo Alto, Calif., fell 7 percent Thursday morning to $140.63.

The high-flying stock had risen in value by more than 400 percent earlier in the year, but fell this week after some analysts found its third-quarter earnings disappointing. Concerns about a battery shortage, as well as the costs Tesla will incur as it builds more cars, spooked some investors.

Tesla Protip: Don't drive over tow hitches.

When/if the price ever comes down, I could see driving one of those.

If when these things become safe, affordable, reliable, and economical...maybe, but then again by then, I'll just teleport to where I'm going.

Wait. What? What in the hell kind of ass backwards logic is that? The car you were in caught the f**k on fire when pretty much no other make or model vehicle on the planet would have done so. Somehow because you didn't die in that fire you say it saved your life? Isn't that about the equivalent of saying that a guy who tries to shoot you saved your live because he missed?

What do you have against electric cars? Anything that gets this country off the middle east's dick is good in my book.

As for the fire, its new technology. They will figure it out and the problem will get solved.

Now think about this - US fire departments responded to an estimated average of 152,300 automobile fires per year between 2006 and 2010, according to the National Fire Protection Association. Those fires caused an average of 209 civilian fatalities.

There are 19,000 Model S drivers worldwide, according to Tesla Motors, and they have driven a total of more than 100 million miles. Three fires have been reported to date. Tesla Motors says it knows of no fatalities ever stemming from an accident involving a Model S.

At least they are not exploding. How many tens of thousands of people have died when a ruptured fuel tank went up?

Another Model S crashes, burns. Tesla Motors (TSLA) stock follows suit. - CSMonitor.com

For $70k I can buy a $10k econ-o-box and about 20k gallons of fuel that would get me at least about 400k miles out of.

It's not just electric cars

Any car that isn't
a.) safe (igniting on minor accidents) I sure wouldn't put my family in one.
b.) affordable: I can buy a decent luxury car for half of a Model S
c.) reliable: it's an unproven technology, and I can't exactly leave town with it
d.) Economical: I still need another car, I can't leave town, and I'll never recover the premium of the car over a comparable gas vehicle
e.) Elon musk: Lets just say i'm not a fan.

Now, many mid-engined cars tend to ignite for no reason as well re: lamborghinis. I certainly wouldn't consider one of those for commuting or driving regularly either. A completely uneconomical toy...sure But then again I'm not in the market for a $100k toy, and if I was it would probably have wings.

How many of those fuel tanks exploded just from running over something in the road?

I'm with you on this one. Each of the fires have been at fault of the driver. Running over debris like a trailer hitch, that would royally screw every car. Hell might go through the floor board in some cars.

As many of you have seen, I have a friend who has one and generously let me drive it for a few hours. I would take a tesla over just about anything else in this world.

and this electric power comes from where?

most comes from coal and oil, then come nat. gas and nuclear. solar and wind are far down the list, and every river worth damming to make hydro has been dammed, so no expansion available there going forward.

admin hates coal
you don't like mideast oil
nat gas comes from tracking
nuclear produces waste and is very expensive.

pedal cars?

If you hit a tow hitch in a C6...you are ****ed anyways and I wouldnt rule out as fire from oil as the hitch ripped the oil pan/cover and sprayed oil on the exhaust...

I dont blame the car, thus far....I blame the drivers.

Oil from the engine you say? I think I can solidly rule that one out for this case.

And no, you run over a little debris in a different car, it won't ignite and burn like a car built with lithium batteries in the floors will.

My wife was driving a Chevrolet Uplander. A reinforcing bar fell off of a truck that was travelling in front of her. She tried to dodge the bar, but due to traffic and the proximity of the truck in front of her, she ran over it. The reinforcing bar struck the gasoline tank a punctured it.

There was no fire.

She drove to the nearest GM dealer and the swapped out the tank. Gave her a loaner even though the Uplander was long out of warranty.

Yeah cause STOCK corvettes regularly ignite due to a minor accident, under city driving conditions.
I hit an amradillo in the corvette it wedged itself under the car...it certainly didn't burst into flames, requiring a fire department to come rip the car apart in order to extinguish the flames.

Nice try though.

With over 1.5 million sold, I bet a lower percentage of Vettes have gone up in flames than "the safest car ever."
